PART 3: THE BETRAYAL BEHIND THE CRASH

PART 3: THE BETRAYAL BEHIND THE CRASH
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The photo sat in the middle of the conference table.
A simple piece of evidence.
But it destroyed everything.
My eyes stayed on the name.
Vanessa.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Not because I was shocked.
Because I was confirming something I already suspected.
She didn’t just abandon me after the accident.
She created it.
The woman who promised to stand beside me forever…
Was the same person who tried to take my life away.
“Say something.”
Vanessa’s voice broke the silence.
But for the first time…
She sounded afraid.
I looked up.
“Did you think I would never find out?”
Her face changed.
“That’s not what this is.”
James stepped forward.
“Security footage shows a meeting between Ms. Vanessa Cole and the driver two days before the accident.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“That proves nothing.”
James placed another document on the table.
“Bank transfer.”
Another.
“Messages.”
Another.
“Voice recording.”
Her smile disappeared.
The board members stared at her.
The same people who had been ready to remove me moments earlier…
Were now looking at her like she was dangerous.
Vanessa pointed at James.
“This is fake.”
James didn’t react.
“You can explain that to investigators.”
The room became chaotic.
People whispered.
Lawyers started calling.
Everyone wanted distance.
Nobody wanted to be connected to her anymore.
Funny.
The same people who watched her insult me…
Now acted like they never knew her.
I looked at Vanessa.
“How much?”
She froze.
“What?”
“How much did you get?”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think this was about money?”
I almost laughed.
“Wasn’t it?”
For a moment, anger replaced fear.
Then she said:
“You never understood.”
I stared at her.
She stepped closer.
“You had everything.”
“A company.”
“A name.”
“A family.”
“People respected you before you even earned it.”
Her voice became bitter.
“And me?”
“I had to fight for every room I entered.”
There it was.
Not an excuse.
A confession.
She wasn’t sorry.
She was jealous.
“You could have built something.”
I said quietly.
Instead of destroying someone else.
She looked away.
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.”
“You loved what I had.”
“Not who I was.”
The words hurt her.
Because they were true.
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Vanessa was questioned.
Not arrested yet.
Her lawyers fought hard.
Money always bought time.
But not forever.
Before she left, she stopped beside my wheelchair.
Everyone expected her to apologize.
She didn’t.
She leaned closer.
And whispered:
“You think you won?”
I looked at her.
She smiled coldly.
“You still don’t know who started this.”
I frowned.
“What?”
She stepped back.
“Ask your father.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving me with a new fear.
Because Vanessa had lied before.
But sometimes…
People who lie still tell the truth accidentally.
That evening, I went to my father’s old office.
A place I hadn’t entered since the accident.
My father died two years earlier.
But his things remained untouched.
My family said it was because I wasn’t ready.
Maybe they were right.
Or maybe…
There were things they didn’t want me to see.
I searched through his files.
Business records.
Personal letters.
Old photographs.
Then I found something hidden behind a false panel.
A small box.
Inside:
A key.
A photograph.
And a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
My hands became cold.
Because the letter was addressed to me.
My son,
If you are reading this…
It means something happened.
Something I hoped would never happen.
I continued.
The people around you are not all loyal.
Some are waiting for weakness.
Some are waiting for your fall.
But the greatest danger is not the person attacking you.
It is the person you never suspect.
I stopped.
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because my father knew.
He knew someone was coming for me.
And he didn’t warn me.
Why?
The letter continued:
I need you to understand one thing.
Your accident was not the beginning.
It was the final step.
My heart raced.
Final step?
Of what?
Then I saw the last page.
And one sentence.
The person who betrayed you has been inside our family for years.
I stared at the words.
Then the office door opened.
I turned.
Clara stood there.
Her face was pale.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“How long have you known?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
And that scared me.
Because Clara was never afraid.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.”
I held the letter tighter.
“Find out what?”
She walked inside slowly.
Then closed the door.
And whispered:
“Your father asked me to protect you.”
I froze.
“What?”
She looked down.
“Before he died.”
My mind raced.
“You knew about the accident?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I knew someone was going to destroy you.”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
Clara looked toward the window.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
Then she said:
“The person who has been controlling Vanessa…”
A tear rolled down her face.
“Is someone much closer than you think.”
I stood frozen.
Because I suddenly realized something.
May you like
Clara was not the person hiding a secret.
She was the person protecting one.
