PART 5: THE LIE BEHIND CLARA'S SILENCE

PART 5: THE LIE BEHIND CLARA'S SILENCE
The room became silent.
Every eye turned toward Clara.
For the first time since I had known her…
She looked afraid.
Not nervous.
Not uncomfortable.
Terrified.
I stared at her.
“Clara.”
She didn’t answer.
My heart sank.
Because the one person I believed was different…
Was suddenly standing in the center of another secret.
Martin was gone.
The police had taken him away.
But his final words remained.
Ask her.
I hated those three words.
Because they meant doubt.
And doubt was exactly what had destroyed my life.
“Clara.”
My voice was quieter.
“Tell me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.”
I almost laughed.
Everyone said that.
Vanessa.
Martin.
Everyone.
“I hope you can.”
She looked down.
“I should have told you earlier.”
“About what?”
She closed her eyes.
“About my connection to your family.”
The room seemed to tilt.
My lawyer Richard looked at me.
Even he was surprised.
“Connection?”
Clara nodded.
“My real name isn’t Clara.”
I froze.
“What?”
She took a breath.
“My name is Clara Bennett.”
The name meant nothing.
Until Richard’s expression changed.
He looked at me.
“Bennett?”
I turned.
“You know that name?”
Richard slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“Years ago, there was a major legal dispute involving Morgan Holdings.”
“A woman named Elena Bennett disappeared after accusing the company of fraud.”
I stared at Clara.
“You’re related to her?”
Clara nodded.
“She was my mother.”
The room went cold.
I remembered the old files.
The accusations.
The missing records.
My father’s warnings.
Everything connected.
“You came here because of revenge?”
Her face broke.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“Then why?”
She stepped closer.
“Because my mother was innocent.”
Silence.
She continued:
“She spent years trying to prove she was framed.”
“Your father knew.”
I frowned.
“My father?”
She nodded.
“He found out the truth.”
“And he tried to fix it.”
I shook my head.
“Why would he hide that from me?”
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of what?”
She looked at me.
“Of the person who destroyed my mother.”
I already knew the answer.
But I asked anyway.
“Who?”
Clara whispered:
“Martin.”
My hands tightened.
“But Martin is dead?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“He was never the mastermind.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then who was?”
Clara looked toward the window.
And whispered:
“The person who has been controlling everyone.”
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
My entire life felt like a puzzle.
Every time I found an answer…
Another question appeared.
I sat alone in my office.
The wheelchair beneath me.
The symbol of the lie I created.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Clara stood at the door.
Holding a folder.
“I found this.”
I looked at her.
“What is it?”
She walked inside.
“Your father hid it.”
I opened it.
Inside were letters.
Old emails.
Photos.
And one document.
My eyes stopped.
Because the signature belonged to my father.
But the name beside it…
Was not Martin.
Not Vanessa.
Not anyone I expected.
It was Daniel.
My best friend.
I stared.
“No.”
Clara said nothing.
Because she knew.
Daniel.
The person who lowered his eyes when Vanessa insulted me.
The person who stayed silent.
The person I thought was just weak.
Not cruel.
I opened the first letter.
My father had written:
I no longer trust Daniel.
He knows too much.
He has access to everything.
And he is closer to my son than anyone.
My breathing stopped.
I looked at Clara.
“When did you find this?”
“Yesterday.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She looked ashamed.
“Because I wanted to be sure.”
I understood.
She wasn’t hiding the truth.
She was protecting me from another mistake.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
The timing was impossible.
I answered.
“Hello.”
There was silence.
Then his voice.
“Where did you find it?”
My blood froze.
“What?”
“The files.”
A pause.
“You found them.”
I looked at Clara.
She heard it too.
“Daniel.”
My voice became cold.
“What did you do?”
He didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“I didn’t want it to happen like this.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Like what?”
He whispered:
“Like you finding out I was never your friend.”
The words hit harder than any betrayal before.
Because Vanessa was obvious.
Martin was suspicious.
But Daniel…
Daniel was family.
“Why?”
I asked.
A long silence.
Then:
“Because your father ruined my life.”
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel’s voice changed.
Filled with anger.
“He took everything from my family.”
“He destroyed us.”
“And you think I should watch you inherit everything?”
I stood frozen.
“Daniel.”
“You tried to kill me?”
“No.”
His answer came quickly.
“No.”
“I wanted control.”
“Not your death.”
A pause.
“But Vanessa…”
My heart stopped.
“What about Vanessa?”
Daniel went silent.
Too long.
Then he said:
“She went too far.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Because for the first time…
I understood.
Daniel wasn’t the mastermind.
He was another piece.
Another person being controlled.
Then Clara picked up the folder.
And noticed something.
A hidden page.
A final message.
She opened it.
And read the words.
Her face turned white.
“What?”
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“Your father knew who the mastermind was.”
I stepped closer.
“Who?”
Clara handed me the paper.
There was one name.
One name that made my entire body go cold.
May you like
Because it belonged to the person I trusted most.
My own mother.
