Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

The heavy rubber doors of the Emergency Department swung open with a loud thud less than three minutes later.
Justin rushed down the hallway, his jacket soaked through from the driving rain outside, his dark hair plastered to his forehead. He looked wild, terrified, and utterly confused, his eyes searching the hallway until he spotted me standing outside Trauma Bay 4.
"Sabrina!" Justin gasped, running up to me and grabbing my shoulders. "What happened? The hospital caller said there was an accident involving Kenneth and... and Maya? Is Maya okay? Was there a crash?"
I didn't answer with words. I simply placed my hand on his chest, turned him toward the curtain, and pulled it wide open.
Justin froze.
The scene inside had not changed, except for the addition of two security guards standing near the back wall, anticipating the exact moment that was about to unfold.
Justin stood in the doorway, his gaze moving from Kenneth's sweat-drenched, terrified face to Maya, who was trembling beneath the white sheet, unable to cover herself. Then his eyes drifted down to the sterile tray, where the glossy photographs of his wife and his brother-in-law kissing on a tropical beach were laid out under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"What... what is this?" Justin whispered, his voice cracking, sounding like a confused child. "Maya? What is this?"
Maya closed her eyes, hot tears streaming down her face. "Justin... please..."
The reality hit him all at once—not like a slow realization, but like an avalanche. Justin let out a raw, guttural roar of pure betrayal and lunged across the foot of the bed directly at Kenneth's throat.
"You son of a bitch!" Justin screamed, his hands reaching for Kenneth's neck. "You ruined my life! You touched my wife!"
"Security!" the lead doctor shouted.
The two security guards instantly tackled Justin from behind, grabbing his arms and pulling him backward away from the gurney as Kenneth shrieked in terror, trying to shrink away, which only caused a fresh tear of scream-inducing pain from his lower torso.
"Get off me!" Justin thrashed against the guards, his chest heaving, his face contorted in agony as he stared at Maya. "How could you, Maya? Four years! I gave you everything! I built a life with you! We were trying to have a baby!"
"Justin, he forced me!" Maya sobbed wildly, her voice shrill and hysterical. "Kenneth threatened to destroy your firm! He told me he would ruin Rollins Global if I didn't sleep with him! He's a monster! He set this all up!"
"I forced you?" Kenneth spat, his face twisted in desperate rage as he looked at Justin. "Justin, she came to my office three nights a week! She’s the one who asked for the apartment in Denver! She’s been draining your personal investment portfolio to buy designer bags and line her own private accounts!"
"Shut up! Both of you, shut up!" Justin roared, breaking free from one guard's grip, though the second guard kept a firm hold on his leather jacket. He stood there, panting heavily, his heart breaking in real-time as he looked at the two people who had destroyed his world.
The attending surgeon stepped forward, holding a blue plastic clipboard with a medical consent form attached to the front. He looked completely exhausted by the drama unfolding in his bay.
"Mrs. Rollins," the doctor said, turning directly to me, ignoring the screaming match happening behind him. "As Mr. Rollins' legal spouse and primary medical proxy, we need your written authorization to perform emergency reconstructive and separation surgery. The synthetic polymer compound has created an impenetrable bond, and prolonged contact is causing localized tissue ischemia. If we do not operate within the hour, permanent surgical damage will occur."
He extended a pen toward me.
I looked at the clipboard. Then I looked at Kenneth.
"Sabrina, sign it!" Kenneth pleaded, his voice breaking into genuine, terrified weeping. "Please, God, Sabrina, I'm in so much pain! Just sign the paper!"
I didn't take the pen. I folded my arms across my chest and looked down at my husband with cold, calculating eyes.
"I will sign it, Kenneth," I said, my voice cutting through the noise in the room like a steel blade. "On one condition."
Kenneth gasped for air, his eyes wide with terror. "Anything! What do you want? The house? The cars? Take them! Just sign the form!"
"I don't care about the house, Kenneth," I said, leaning closer so only he could hear me clearly over Maya's quiet sobbing. "I want the master combination to the floor safe hidden behind the oak paneling in your private corporate office at Rollins Headquarters."
Kenneth went completely, utterly rigid.
The color that had slowly been returning to his face vanished instantly, replaced by a gray so dark it looked like death itself. The sheer terror in his eyes now was ten times worse than the pain he was experiencing from the chemical glue.
"How... how do you know about that safe?" he whispered, his jaw trembling.
"I know everything, Kenneth," I replied softly. "Give me the combination, or I walk out of this hospital, turn off my phone, and let the surgical board take their time deciding how to handle your procedure."
Kenneth stared at me, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. He knew I meant every single word.
"Twelve... thirty-four... ninety-nine... seven," he choked out, his head falling back against the sweat-stained hospital pillow. "The key is hidden inside the false fountain on the desk."
I took the pen from the surgeon's hand, pressed the clipboard against the rolling tray, and signed my name in clear, elegant cursive across the authorization line.

"He's all yours, Doctor," I said.
I turned on my heel, grabbed my leather folder, and walked out of Trauma Bay 4 without looking back once.
