Chapter 5 - The Shadow Ledger

Justin stood beside me, holding a flashlight focused on the mahogany desk as I spread the contents of the safe across the leather blotter.

"What is that paper?" Justin asked, his voice shaking as he watched my face turn completely white. "Sabrina, what does it say?"

I couldn't speak for a full minute. My breath came in short, cold hitches.

The top document in the Swiss laboratory envelope was a certified toxicology report dated July 14th, 2023—two weeks before our father, Arthur Rollins, suffered his catastrophic, fatal "heart attack" at our mountain estate in Vail.

The report listed high concentrations of Digitalis Purpurea combined with an unlisted lipid-solubilizing agent—a compound that, when administered over six weeks, creates acute cardiac arrhythmia that completely mimics natural coronary failure in post-autopsy toxicology screens.

Attached to the report was an invoice billed to an offshore trust named Aegis Holdings LLC—the exact same shell company I had traced Kenneth's wire transfers to three weeks ago.

"He didn't just try to sterilize me, Justin," I whispered, my voice hollow, echoing in the vast, empty office. "He killed Dad."

Justin dropped the flashlight. It clattered against the desk, casting long, erratic shadows across the room. "What? No... no! Dad had a pre-existing heart condition! The doctors said it was an enlarged left ventricle!"

"Because Kenneth made sure that's what the doctors saw!" I slammed my hand down on the desk, my tears finally breaking through, hot and burning. "Look at the dates, Justin! Dad was going to remove Kenneth as Vice President of Operations on August 1st, 2023! He died on July 28th! And three days after Dad was buried, Kenneth produced the modified corporate will that appointed him as co-trustee of the family estate!"

Justin collapsed into the leather armchair opposite the desk, burying his face in his trembling hands, let out a heartbroken, terrified groan. "God... oh God... we let a murderer into our home. We ate dinner with him. We invited him to holidays. I let him stand beside me at my wedding!"

"And Maya knew," I added, turning to the second document inside the envelope.

It was a signed non-disclosure agreement and property transfer deed dated three months ago. In exchange for two million dollars transferred into a private Swiss account registered in Maya’s maiden name, she had signed away her right to testify regarding "unusual medical substances stored at the Cherry Hills residence."

Maya hadn't just been Kenneth's mistress. She had been his accomplice. She had discovered what Kenneth was doing to my father and my health, and instead of stopping him, instead of saving her husband's family, she had used the information to blackmail Kenneth into buying her silence, her luxury lifestyle, and her future.

"She knew," Justin said, looking up from his hands, his eyes completely bloodshot, his face twisted in a terrifying mask of betrayal. "She knew he killed my father... and she took money to keep quiet?"

"She used it as leverage to force him to leave me," I said, flipping through the ledger books. "Look here. This is the shadow ledger for Rollins Global. Kenneth has been diverting federal infrastructure funds from our bridges project in New Mexico into a private defense contractor account in Panama. Over twelve million dollars is gone."

"If the federal auditors find this before we report it," Justin said, his professional instincts kicking in despite his grief, "the entire board will face federal indictment. Rollins Global will be liquidated by Friday."

"They won't find it first," a sharp, composed voice spoke from the dark doorway of the office.

We both snapped our heads toward the entrance.

Marcus Vance—my lead private investigator and a former federal prosecutor—stepped into the room, wearing a long black trench coat, carrying a sleek metallic briefcase. Behind him stood two federal agents from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, dressed in dark suits with gold badges displayed on their belts.

"I got your message, Sabrina," Marcus said, stepping into the room and glancing at the open safe and the documents spread across the desk. "I brought Special Agents Miller and Ross. I assume you have the physical evidence we discussed?"

"It's all here, Marcus," I said, stepping back from the desk, my voice regaining its iron control. "Forensic toxicology, shadow ledgers, proof of grand embezzlement, and murder."

Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of white latex gloves from his pocket. He inspected the Swiss toxicology report and the shadow ledgers with sharp, practiced eyes.

"Mrs. Rollins," Agent Miller said, looking up at me with profound seriousness. "This evidence is sufficient to execute an immediate federal seizure warrant for all domestic and offshore assets connected to Kenneth Rollins and Maya Mitchell. We are also contacting the District Attorney's Homicide Task Force in Eagle County regarding your father's death."

"How fast can you freeze their accounts?" I asked.

May you like

Agent Miller pulled out a satellite tablet from his coat. "The federal freeze order will hit their international banking network in precisely fifteen minutes."

"Good," I said, reaching down to grab my leather folder and my car keys. "Because Kenneth and Maya are coming out of surgery at Saint Anthony's in thirty minutes. And I want to be standing right outside the recovery room when the handcuffs go on."
