PART 2

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The entire kitchen seemed frozen in time.
The rain tapped softly against the windows.
The clock on the wall kept ticking.
But inside that room, everything had stopped.
Because the dead man had come home.
Alejandro.
My husband.
The man I had cried for.
The man I had whispered goodbye to every night while holding my growing belly.
He was standing right in front of me.
Alive.
And somehow, that was the most terrifying part.
Because if Alejandro was alive…
Then who had sent the letter?
Who had made me believe I was a widow?
Who had spent months slowly destroying my life?
My eyes moved toward Victoria.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Alejandro…”
Victoria’s voice trembled.
She forced a smile.
A fake one.
The same smile she had used every time she convinced me I was imagining things.
“My son, you don’t understand what’s happening.”
Alejandro didn’t answer.
He stood there, calm and unreadable.
The same calm that made him a great soldier.
The same calm that now terrified his own mother.
His eyes moved to the table.
The documents.
The fake reports.
The guardianship papers.
Then to me.
My face must have told him everything.
Because his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
His jaw tightened.
His hands curled into fists.
Not from anger toward me.
From guilt.
“Elena.”
Hearing my name from his lips nearly broke me.
I wanted to run to him.
I wanted to touch him.
To make sure he was real.
But my body refused to move.
Because for eight months, I had been forced to accept that he was gone.
And now my heart didn’t know whether to celebrate or protect itself.
“You’re alive.”
My voice barely came out.
Alejandro’s eyes filled with pain.
“Yes.”
One word.
But it carried months of suffering.
“I’m alive.”
I covered my mouth.
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
The guilt on his face deepened.
“I know.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
My voice broke.
“I was alone.”
His eyes lowered.
“I know.”
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Both of us looked at her.
She was trying to regain control.
Trying to become the woman who always had the answer.
“Alejandro, you are exhausted. You have just returned from a traumatic mission. You don’t know what Elena has been like.”
I stared at her.
Even now.
Even with him standing there.
She was still lying.
“She needs help,” Victoria continued.
“She has been unstable for months.”
Alejandro slowly turned toward her.
“Unstable?”
Victoria nodded quickly.
“Yes.”
She pointed toward me.
“She accused me of things. She became paranoid. She thought people were trying to take her child.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Because you were.”
Victoria ignored me.
“She needs treatment.”
Alejandro looked at the papers.
Then back at his mother.
“Did you write these?”
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
Victoria’s face tightened.
“Of course not.”
Alejandro picked up one of the reports.
“You expect me to believe that?”
His voice remained calm.
But I knew him.
This was the calm before the storm.
“I spent my entire life learning how to identify fake intelligence.”
He held the paper up.
“This is not from a doctor.”
Victoria blinked.
“What?”
He pointed at the page.
“Wrong terminology. Wrong formatting. The signatures don’t match hospital records.”
His eyes became colder.
“Someone fabricated this.”
Victoria’s lips parted.
For once, she had no immediate response.
The sound of police sirens grew louder.
Closer.
Victoria turned toward the window.
Then back at Alejandro.
“Listen to me.”
Her voice changed.
Softer.
The mother voice.
The voice she had probably used his entire life.
“I did this for you.”
Alejandro stared.
“For me?”
“Yes.”
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what Elena was doing to your reputation.”
My stomach twisted.
“My reputation?”
Victoria nodded.
“She was planning to take everything.”
Alejandro looked confused.
“Everything?”
“The house. Your inheritance. Your child.”
I couldn’t believe it.
The lies were endless.
“She is dangerous.”
Victoria pointed at me.
“She trapped you.”
Alejandro looked at me.
And something broke in his eyes.
Because he realized something.
His mother had spent months trying to make him hate me.
And I had been fighting alone.
He walked toward me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he was approaching someone injured.
Because I was.
Not physically.
But inside.
He stopped in front of me.
“Did she hurt you?”
I looked at him.
My lips trembled.
“She tried.”
His eyes dropped to my stomach.
“Our baby?”
I nodded.
“She wanted me to sign papers.”
His face changed.
“What papers?”
“Guardianship.”
A long silence.
Then Alejandro looked at his mother.
And the disappointment on his face was worse than anger.
“Mom…”
Victoria stepped back.
“I was protecting my grandchild.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“You were stealing my child.”
The front door opened.
Police officers entered.
A neighbor had called after hearing shouting.
Victoria immediately transformed.
The tears appeared.
The shaking hands.
The frightened expression.
It happened so quickly I almost admired it.
Almost.
“Officer!”
She rushed toward them.
“My son just came home from war and attacked me!”
Alejandro didn’t move.
The officers looked between them.
Victoria pointed at him.
“He is confused. He’s traumatized.”
Then she pointed at me.
“And she has been mentally unstable for months.”
My heart sank.
She was trying the same story again.
One officer approached Alejandro.
“Sir, did you threaten this woman?”
Alejandro calmly handed him his phone.
“No.”
The officer looked at him.
“What is this?”
“Evidence.”
The officer checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“What am I looking at?”
Alejandro replied:
“Audio recordings from the security system.”
My eyes widened.
I hadn’t known.
Victoria hadn’t known either.
She froze.
“You recorded me?”
Alejandro looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“The house did.”
The officer pressed play.
The recording filled the kitchen.
Victoria’s voice.
Cold.
Clear.
“You were always temporary.”
My blood ran cold hearing it again.
Then:
“A woman like you was never meant to be part of this family.”
The room went silent.
Victoria’s face turned pale.
Because there was no acting anymore.
No performance.
No escape.
The recording continued.
Her voice.
Threats.
Pressure.
Her plan to take the baby.
Everything.
The officer looked at Victoria.
“Ma’am, you need to explain why you have forged medical documents and attempted to obtain guardianship over your son’s unborn child.”
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then she looked at Alejandro.
And whispered:
“You would choose her over me?”
Alejandro’s face was full of sadness.
Not hatred.
Sadness.
“You made me choose.”
As the officers collected the papers, one question remained.
Why?
Why would a mother do this?
Why fake her own son’s death?
Why destroy the woman carrying her grandchild?
Then Alejandro found something hidden beneath the documents.
A folder.
His face changed as he opened it.
I watched him read.
Page after page.
His expression slowly darkened.
“What is it?”
He didn’t answer.
“Is there more?”
Finally, he looked at me.
And the pain in his eyes frightened me.
“Yes.”
He held the folder tightly.
“My mother wasn’t just trying to take the baby.”
A pause.
“She was trying to take everything from me.”
The room went silent.
Because whatever was inside that folder…
May you like
Was bigger than we imagined.
And Victoria wasn’t finished yet.
