PART 4

The words hung in the air.
“Someone inside.”
The detective’s voice was quiet.
But the meaning behind it was devastating.
Someone had access to military systems.
Someone knew how to manipulate official records.
Someone had the power to erase Alejandro from our lives.
And suddenly, the person who terrified me most wasn’t the woman sitting in the other room.
It was the person still hidden.
The person who had started everything.
Alejandro stared at the detective.
His soldier instincts immediately took over.
The shock disappeared.
The emotion disappeared.
Only focus remained.
“Tell me everything.”
The detective opened his notebook.
“We traced the fake casualty notification through several channels.”
“And?”
“It wasn’t generated randomly.”
He looked at Alejandro.
“Someone used legitimate military formatting and information.”
My stomach twisted.
“Meaning?”
The detective answered:
“Meaning whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing.”
Alejandro walked toward the window.
The rain had stopped.
But the night outside looked darker than before.
For months, he had believed he was fighting enemies overseas.
He had never imagined the real threat was waiting at home.
“I need names.”
The detective nodded.
“We are checking access logs now.”
A pause.
“But one name already appeared.”
Alejandro turned.
“Who?”
The detective hesitated.
Then:
“Colonel Adrian Black.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But Alejandro’s face changed instantly.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“Impossible.”
The detective watched him carefully.
“You know him?”
Alejandro slowly nodded.
“He was my commanding officer.”
The room went silent.
“He trained me.”
His voice lowered.
“I trusted him.”
I felt a chill.
Because Alejandro had spent his entire life believing loyalty was everything.
And now the people closest to him were becoming suspects.
His mother.
His uncle.
His commander.
Everyone who claimed to protect him.
Everyone who had betrayed him.
“What does he have to gain?” I asked.
Alejandro looked at me.
Then at the documents.
“Control.”
The answer came quickly.
“Control of the company. Control of the inheritance.”
He swallowed.
“And control of me.”
The detective placed another file on the table.
“We found this in your mother’s house.”
Alejandro opened it.
Inside were photos.
My heart stopped.
Photos of me.
Going to appointments.
Shopping.
Walking alone.
Every moment had been recorded.
Tracked.
Watched.
My hands started shaking.
“She was monitoring me.”
Alejandro immediately looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
“This happened because of your family.”
His eyes lowered.
“I know.”
Then I saw something.
A photo near the bottom.
It was taken outside the hospital.
The day I gave birth.
Except…
Alejandro wasn’t there.
Because everyone thought he was dead.
And standing behind Victoria was another man.
A man wearing a military uniform.
The same man from the detective’s file.
Colonel Adrian Black.
My blood ran cold.
“He was here?”
The detective nodded.
“Yes.”
Alejandro grabbed the photo.
His expression became unreadable.
“Why was my commander watching my wife?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
The answer was terrifying.
Meanwhile, in the living room, Victoria sat silently.
The woman who always had a response.
The woman who controlled every conversation.
Was now staring at the floor.
Alejandro walked toward her.
“Did Adrian Black contact you?”
Victoria looked up.
At first, she said nothing.
Then her eyes moved.
Just slightly.
But it was enough.
Alejandro saw it.
And so did the detective.
“You knew.”
Victoria’s lips trembled.
“I didn’t understand what he was planning.”
Alejandro laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“He told me you would leave everything behind.”
Her voice cracked.
“He told me Elena would destroy the family.”
I stepped forward.
“And you believed him?”
Victoria looked at me.
“I was afraid.”
The honesty shocked me.
Because it was the first real emotion she had shown.
“I was afraid of losing my son.”
Alejandro stared at her.
“You almost destroyed my wife.”
Victoria cried.
“I thought I was saving you.”
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“You were protecting yourself.”
For the first time, Victoria looked small.
Not powerful.
Not dangerous.
Just a broken person who had made terrible choices.
But her regret didn’t erase what she had done.
The detective’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
“What happened?”
He ended the call.
“We found Adrian Black.”
Everyone froze.
“Where?”
The detective looked at Alejandro.
“He’s at the private airport.”
My heart dropped.
“Why?”
The detective hesitated.
“He booked a flight overseas.”
Alejandro immediately understood.
“He’s running.”
Everything happened quickly.
Police moved through the house.
Officers searched for additional evidence.
Alejandro grabbed his coat.
“I’m coming.”
The detective stopped him.
“Captain, you’re not authorized.”
Alejandro looked at him.
“He tried to destroy my family.”
A pause.
“I’m going.”
I reached for his hand.
He looked at me.
And for a moment, he wasn’t a soldier.
He was just my husband.
The man who had missed eight months.
The man who came home.
“Come back.”
His eyes softened.
“I will.”
“You promised me before.”
Pain crossed his face.
“I know.”
My voice trembled.
“So don’t make the same mistake twice.”
He held my hand.
“I won’t.”
Thirty minutes later, police vehicles raced through the city.
Alejandro sat in the passenger seat.
Watching the road.
Silent.
Thinking.
The detective beside him received updates.
“He’s still at the airport.”
Alejandro nodded.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone went quiet.
He answered.
“Hello?”
No response.
Then a voice.
A familiar voice.
A voice that made Alejandro’s entire body stiffen.
“Captain Ramirez.”
Colonel Adrian Black.
Alive.
Calm.
Confident.
“You took longer than I expected.”
Alejandro’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
A soft laugh came through the phone.
“Because you were never supposed to come home.”
The car became silent.
Adrian continued.
“Your mother was useful.”
A pause.
“Your uncle was greedy.”
Another pause.
“But you…”
His voice lowered.
“You were always the problem.”
Alejandro’s grip tightened around the phone.
“You tried to erase me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian answered immediately.
“Because you refused to give me what I wanted.”
“And what was that?”
The voice on the phone became colder.
“Everything.”
The call ended.
When they arrived at the airport…
The private jet was still there.
The lights were on.
The door was open.
But Adrian Black was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A folder placed neatly on the pilot’s seat.
With Alejandro’s name written across the front.
And inside was a message.
One sentence.
May you like
A sentence that changed everything.
“Ask your wife what she knows about your father’s death.”
