PART 3

The police officers stood in the kitchen, surrounded by evidence that had destroyed the perfect image of Doña Victoria.

The elegant woman.

The respected mother.

The pillar of the Ramirez family.

That woman was gone.

All that remained was someone who had spent months carefully building a nightmare around me.

But Alejandro’s face told me something worse.

The documents he had found were not just about me.

They were about him.

And whatever was written inside that folder had shaken the strongest man I knew.

“Alejandro,” I whispered.

He looked at the papers again.

His hands were trembling slightly.

I had never seen that before.

Not during the worst storms.

Not during his deployments.

Not when he told me stories about the dangerous missions he had survived.

Nothing had ever broken his control.

Except this.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

One of the officers noticed his reaction.

“Captain Ramirez, if there’s additional evidence, we need to see it.”

Alejandro slowly handed over the folder.

The officer opened it.

The first page was a bank transfer record.

The second was a property agreement.

The third was a legal document.

I watched the officer’s expression change.

Then another officer stepped closer.

“What are we looking at?”

The first officer looked at Alejandro.

“Sir… this appears to be financial fraud.”

Victoria suddenly became quiet.

Too quiet.

She had spent the last hour trying to control the room.

Trying to manipulate everyone.

But now she was afraid.

Because this wasn’t about emotions anymore.

This was about facts.

Evidence.

Numbers.

Records.

Things she couldn’t cry her way out of.

Alejandro looked at his mother.

“What did you do?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Son…”

“No.”

His voice stopped her.

“I want the truth.”

She looked away.

That was the first time I saw her unable to meet his eyes.

The officer continued reading.

“Captain Ramirez, according to these documents, there are multiple unauthorized transfers from your investment accounts.”

Alejandro froze.

“My accounts?”

“Yes.”

The officer looked confused.

“These were made while you were deployed.”

My stomach turned.

Victoria had been stealing from him.

While he was risking his life.

While I was mourning him.

While we thought our future had disappeared.

She was quietly destroying everything.

Alejandro laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

“So that was the plan.”

Victoria looked at him.

“What?”

“You didn’t just want my child.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You wanted control.”

She said nothing.

“You created a fake death notice.”

His voice became colder.

“You isolated Elena.”

Another step closer.

“You made sure she had no access to my accounts.”

He held up the documents.

“And then you planned to take legal control over my estate.”

I felt sick.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The canceled appointments.

The fake reports.

The constant reminders that Alejandro was gone.

She wasn’t just trying to hurt me.

She was preparing.

Preparing to make me look unstable.

Preparing to remove me.

Preparing to become the only person with access to Alejandro’s life.

“Why?” I whispered.

Victoria looked at me.

For a moment, the mask disappeared.

And I saw something ugly.

Not anger.

Resentment.

“You.”

I stepped back.

“Me?”

She laughed bitterly.

“Yes, you.”

Alejandro immediately moved between us.

But Victoria kept going.

“You took everything.”

I stared at her.

“I took nothing.”

“You took my son.”

The words shocked me.

Alejandro looked at her like he didn’t recognize her.

“I married Elena.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with anger.

“You changed after meeting her.”

Silence.

“You stopped listening to me.”

Her voice cracked.

“You built a life without me.”

There it was.

The real reason.

Not money.

Not the baby.

Not the family name.

Control.

Victoria didn’t want her son happy.

She wanted him dependent.

She wanted him to remain the boy who needed her.

And when he became a man…

She blamed me.

“You made him weak,” she said.

I almost laughed.

Because it was the opposite.

Alejandro became stronger because he loved me.

But I didn’t say it.

Because Alejandro did.

“You’re wrong, Mom.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I’m stronger than I’ve ever been.”

Her face collapsed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“She made me someone I wanted to be.”

The officers escorted Victoria into the living room while they continued processing evidence.

I remained in the kitchen with Alejandro.

For the first time all night, we were alone.

Really alone.

The silence between us was heavy.

Not uncomfortable.

Just full of everything we had lost.

Everything we needed to say.

“You hate me.”

I looked up.

Alejandro was staring at the floor.

My heart broke.

“What?”

“For leaving you.”

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

I didn’t hate him.

I hated the empty nights.

The fear.

The loneliness.

The months of believing my child would never meet her father.

“I don’t know what I feel.”

He nodded.

“I deserve that.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You do.”

My voice softened.

“But not because you died.”

His eyes filled.

“Because I wasn’t there.”

He stepped closer.

“I tried to come home.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His face became painful.

“The mission went wrong.”

He took a breath.

“I was injured.”

My heart tightened.

“I was trapped overseas for weeks.”

I whispered:

“Then how did she know?”

Alejandro’s eyes darkened.

“That’s what I don’t understand.”

He explained.

His unit had been attacked.

Communication systems failed.

Several soldiers were missing.

His identification information was mistakenly included in an early casualty report.

But the official notification had been corrected.

Except…

The correction never reached home.

Someone had intercepted it.

Someone had replaced it.

Someone had wanted me to believe he was gone.

“And your mother knew.”

Alejandro nodded.

“I think so.”

The room felt colder.

“She used the mistake.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the room where Victoria sat with officers.

“She saw an opportunity.”

Then something happened.

One of the detectives entered.

“Captain Ramirez.”

Alejandro turned.

The detective looked serious.

“We found something else.”

My heart sank.

“What now?”

The detective hesitated.

“Your mother wasn’t working alone.”

Alejandro went still.

“What?”

“We found communication between her and another person.”

The detective handed him a printed message.

Alejandro read it.

His expression changed.

A name appeared.

Someone I didn’t know.

Someone connected to the family.

Someone who had been helping Victoria.

“Who is it?”

Alejandro didn’t answer.

The detective did.

“Your uncle.”

Silence.

The man who had attended our wedding.

The man who hugged me after Alejandro’s supposed death.

The man who told me:

“We will protect you.”

He had been part of it.

I looked at Alejandro.

“What does he want?”

Alejandro’s voice was barely audible.

“The company.”

The pieces came together.

A fake death.

A stolen inheritance.

A wife made to look unstable.

A child used as leverage.

It was never just Victoria.

It was a family plan.

The detective looked at Alejandro.

“Captain, there’s one more thing.”

He hesitated.

“The person who sent the fake military notice…”

A pause.

“Wasn’t your mother.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Then who?”

The detective looked between us.

And said the words that made my blood turn cold.

“The person who created it was someone who had access to military communication systems.”

Alejandro’s face changed.

Because he understood.

Before I did.

Someone inside.

Someone powerful.

Someone who knew exactly how to make a soldier disappear.

And suddenly…

May you like

Alejandro’s return home no longer felt like the end of a nightmare.

It felt like the beginning of a war.
