Chapter 3 - The Sterile Sanctuary

The lights of the emergency room at Dallas General Hospital flickered rhythmically above me as the gurney rolled down the hallway. Doctors and nurses swarmed around, taking blood samples, setting up IV lines, and hooking up continuous fetal monitoring equipment.

My sister, Lily, walked rapidly beside my gurney, clutching my right hand tightly. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, but her grip was firm.

"You're going to be okay, Vee," Lily sobbed, wiping her cheeks with her sleeve. "Hunter is going to be okay. The doctor said his heart rate is stable."

"I know," I whispered, squeezing her fingers back. "I knew he was strong."

Dr. Evelyn Reed, my obstetrician who had been called ahead by the paramedics, stepped into the trauma bay. She quickly performed an ultrasound, her eyes focused intently on the glowing monitor screen.

"There's a minor placental abruption from the impact," Dr. Reed explained calmly, her voice steady and reassuring. "We don't need to perform an emergency C-section right this second, but you are going to stay on strict bed rest in the High-Risk ICU until delivery. We are going to monitor both of you around the clock."

"Whatever it takes, Dr. Reed," I said. "Just keep him safe."

Ten minutes later, after the medical team stabilized my IV drips and cleaned the buttercream and dried blood from my face, Agent Vance pushed open the door to the private room. He carried a leather briefcase and set it on the small table near the bed.

"How are you holding up, Vanessa?" Vance asked gently, removing his coat.

"Better than Ryan," I replied, a small, weary smile touching my lips. "Did the arrests go smoothly?"

"Charles tried to resist," Vance said, a faint glint of satisfaction in his eyes. "He claimed he was having a heart attack, but our medical team checked him on site. He’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the federal courthouse along with Ryan and Eleanor. Savannah Pierce was released after three hours of questioning—she sang like a canary the moment we showed her the fraud charges. She handed over three months of text messages from Ryan detailing how he planned to frame you for corporate embezzlement."

"And the prenuptial agreement?" I asked.

"Voided," Vance declared firmly. "Clause 14 of the contract stated that any criminal act committed by either party against the other nullifies all asset protection clauses. Furthermore, under federal victim protection laws, we have placed a freeze on all Calloway personal accounts, but secured an emergency court order directing two million dollars from their seized liquid assets directly into a protected trust for you and Hunter's medical and living expenses."

Lily let out a long breath, sitting down heavily in the chair beside my bed. "They thought they were going to throw you away like trash."

"They thought I was helpless because I was quiet," I said, looking out the window at the Dallas skyline. "They forgot that I spent four years managing the legal compliance department at Calloway Global before I married Ryan. I knew where every single body was buried."

"The arraignment is tomorrow morning at nine," Vance said, leaning forward. "Charles’s legal team is already trying to push for a ten-million-dollar bail. They want out before the markets open."

"Don't let them out, Agent Vance," I said, my voice hardening. "Because tomorrow morning, I’m releasing the second phase."
