Chapter 5 - The Glass House Falls

By noon, the federal bail hearing began at the United States District Courthouse.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a soft cream coat over my suit, with Lily sitting beside me. Behind us sat dozens of journalists, court reporters, and curious onlookers.
The side door opened, and three bailiffs led the Calloway family into the courtroom.
They were no longer wearing their tailored suits or gold watches. Charles, Eleanor, and Ryan were dressed in bright orange federal detention scrubs, their hands handcuffed at their waists and their ankles chained together.
Ryan looked exhausted, dark circles bruised under his eyes. Eleanor looked completely disheveled, her expensive hair styling ruined. Charles walked with his head down, refusing to look at the gallery.
As Ryan reached the defense table, his eyes caught mine. A look of desperate, pathetic pleading washed over his face.
"Vanessa..." Ryan mouthed silently across the room.
I looked at him with complete, unyielding coldness.
The judge, Honorable Maria Rodriguez, took the bench and slammed her gavel down. "We are here for the bail hearing in United States v. Calloway et al. Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance, state the government's position."
Agent Vance stepped forward. "Your Honor, the government requests that all three defendants be held without bail pending trial. They possess immense wealth, private aircraft, and extensive foreign connections. They represent an extreme flight risk."
Charles’s new criminal defense attorney, a high-priced lawyer named Thomas Vance (no relation to the agent), stood up rapidly. "Your Honor! My clients are respected pillars of the Dallas community! Charles Calloway is a philanthropist! Ryan Calloway is a surgeon! We are prepared to post a twenty-million-dollar bond using their Highland Park estate and corporate equity!"
"Your Honor, if I may," Marcus Sterling stood up from our bench, handing a fresh document to the bailiff to pass to the judge. "The Highland Park estate was purchased using proceeds from documented wire fraud, and as of three hours ago, Calloway Global Enterprises has officially terminated all three defendants. They hold no corporate equity, and their personal assets have been frozen by federal order."
Judge Rodriguez reviewed the documents on her desk, her expression growing increasingly stern. She looked down over her glasses at the defense table.
"Mr. Calloway," Judge Rodriguez said, addressing Charles. "It appears your financial foundation has completely evaporated overnight."
"Your Honor, please!" Eleanor cried out, breaking decorum. "My daughter-in-law is doing this out of spite! She’s mentally unstable! She’s trying to destroy our family!"
"Silence in the court, Mrs. Calloway," Judge Rodriguez warned sharply. "Given the severity of the RICO charges, the clear evidence of witness intimidation and physical assault presented in the hospital reports, and the substantial flight risk, the defense's request for bail is denied. The defendants will remain in federal custody until trial."
BANG.
The gavel struck the wooden block like a thunderclap.
Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical shriek and collapsed into her chair. Ryan dropped his head onto the defense table, weeping openly. Charles sat frozen, his hands shaking violently inside his handcuffs as the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away.
As Ryan was turned toward the exit door, he looked back at me one last time, tears streaming down his face. "Vanessa, please! Think of Hunter! He needs a father!"
May you like
I stood up slowly, gently resting my hand over my round belly.
"Hunter already has everything he needs, Ryan," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the quiet courtroom. "He has a mother who protected him."
