Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The silence in the room over the next four minutes was suffocating, broken only by Richard’s panicked, hushed demands into the encrypted tablet.
"I don't care what time it is in New York!" Richard barked into the receiver, his voice cracking with desperation. "Execute the emergency transfer protocols now! Everything under Derek's portfolio—the trust funds, the real estate in Aspen, the Manhattan penthouse, the corporate stock options—transfer it all to Clara's newly established primary trust! Sign the executive waiver using my master key code!"
On the other end of the line, corporate lawyers were undoubtedly baffled, but Richard’s sheer terror was contagious. He authorized digital signatures, bypassed secondary board approvals, and executed irrevocable power-of-attorney documents at breakneck speed.
Derek sat frozen in the chair, clutching his broken ribs, watching his entire fortune, status, and future vanish into thin air with a few taps on a screen. He looked at his father, then at Ray, his eyes filled with disbelief and malice, but he didn't dare utter a single syllable.
"It's done... it's all done!" Richard gasped, handing the tablet back to Ray with trembling hands. "The legal team confirmed the transfer. The filings are logged with the federal banking portal. Clara owns everything Derek had. Derek is legally bankrupt and has forfeited all parental claims."
Ray took the tablet, glanced at the green verification codes scrolling across the encrypted screen, and nodded once. He tucked the tablet back into his jacket pocket.
"Good," Ray said softly. He stepped over to the bedside tray, picked up his two hearing aids, and inserted them back into his ears with practiced ease. The subtle change in his posture signaled that the private executioner had temporarily stepped back, leaving behind the quiet, stoic uncle I had known my entire life.
Just as Ray finished adjusting his hearing aids, three rapid, heavy thuds echoed against the outside of the hospital door.
"Police! Open the door!" a loud voice commanded from the hallway.
The door's handle rattled violently, but the deadbolt held firm.
Derek’s eyes lit up with a sudden burst of desperate hope. He thought the police were here to save him. He took a painful, shuddering breath and opened his mouth to scream for help. "In here! Help—"
Before Derek could finish the sentence, Ray didn't even turn around. He simply reached back with a backward elbow strike, catching Derek square in the side of his jaw. Derek's mouth snapped shut with a sickening click, sending him tumbling out of the chair onto the floor, unconscious and bleeding from the lip.
"I told you to stay quiet," Ray muttered softly.
Ray walked calmly over to the door, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled it open.
Standing in the hallway were four armed state troopers in tactical vests, their sidearms drawn, accompanied by Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to Derek's family—a veteran investigator from the Major Crimes Division.
"Nobody move!" Detective Marcus shouted, sweeping his weapon into the room. But his eyes immediately landed on the micro-camera hidden in the stuffed rabbit on the tray, then on my bruised neck, and finally on the two grown men lying on the floor—one unconscious, the other weeping in the corner.
"Clara Mitchell?" Detective Marcus asked, lowering his firearm slightly as he recognized the live-stream feed that had triggered their emergency response. "Are you safe?"
"I'm safe, Detective," I said quietly, holding my baby close. "My husband assaulted me. My uncle intervened to protect me."
Detective Marcus looked at Ray. Ray stood completely still, his hands resting casually at his sides, his face an unreadable mask of absolute innocence. To the police officers, he looked like nothing more than an aging mechanic who had stumbled into a domestic crisis.
"Get medical personnel in here for the victim," Detective Marcus ordered his officers, stepping into the room. He walked over to Derek, kicking his limp hand away from his body, and clicked a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around Derek's wrists. "Derek Vance, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault, aggravated strangulation, and unlawful restraint."
Richard scrambled up from the floor, trying desperately to smooth down his ruined suit. "Detective! You don't understand! This man... this old man attacked us! He forced me to sign corporate documents under duress!"
Detective Marcus turned a cold glare toward Richard. "Mr. Vance, we’ve been monitoring the live stream from Mrs. Vance’s room for the past twenty minutes. We saw your son choke his wife. We heard him confess to domestic abuse on camera. And as for your financial transfers—we saw you voluntarily hand over a tablet after realizing your son’s criminal liability. If you want to claim duress, you can explain it to a judge during your son's bail hearing. But given the clear video evidence of brutal domestic violence, I suggest you shut your mouth."
Richard clamped his mouth shut, realizing the trap had completely closed around them. The camera hadn't just captured Derek's assault; it had captured their complete exposure.
As the paramedics rushed into the room to examine me and baby Maya, Detective Marcus leaned in close to Ray, whispering in a low tone that only Ray could hear.

"We got a call from the Director of State Police ten minutes ago, unit commander," Marcus whispered respectfully. "Orders came straight from the federal level. The video feed was intercepted, scrubbed of any... unusual combat tactics, and hard-coded for standard prosecution. Your identity remains clean."
Ray gave a brief, imperceptible nod. "Thank you, Detective. Just make sure the trash is taken out."
