Chapter 7 - The Master's Gambit

Ray took the white envelope, sliding a thumb under the seal and opening it with slow, deliberate precision. Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment paper bearing the gold embossed crest of the Executive Office of the President.

He read the letter silently, his face an unreadable slab of granite.

"What does it say, Uncle Ray?" I asked softly, feeling a sudden pang of anxiety. Were they going to take him away? Were they going to arrest him for what he did to protect me?

Ray handed the paper back to Evelyn without a word. "Tell the Secretary that my answer is the same as it was twelve years ago. I am retired. I have no interest in returning to active field operations, nor do I intend to interfere in political matters—provided my family is left in peace."

Evelyn accepted the paper, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching her lips. "I figured as much. But the Department needed to hear it directly from you. The incident at the hospital was... messy, Ray. You broke a billionaire's son's ribs and brought a defense empire to its knees in under twenty minutes."

"He put his hands on my niece," Ray said simply, as if that explained everything in the universe. "He was lucky I was feeling generous because of the newborn."

Evelyn let out a low, dry laugh. "Generous. Only you would call total financial, legal, and personal destruction 'generous'." She turned to me, her sharp eyes scanning my expression. "Clara, as of two hours ago, the DIA has officially severed all government ties with Vance Dynamics. The company is going into immediate receivership. The court-appointed administrator will be liquidating the remaining physical assets, and as the primary holder of their commercial real estate debt, you will receive first priority in the liquidation distribution."

"I don't care about the money, Director," I said firmly, holding my ground. "I just want my daughter to grow up safe. I want Derek and Richard away from us forever."

"They won't bother you ever again," Evelyn assured me, her tone dropping into a grave, serious register. "Derek is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of eight years in state prison for aggravated domestic violence, with additional federal charges pending for witness intimidation. Richard is facing up to twenty years for corporate espionage and treason. They have lost their freedom, their fortune, and their standing. They are ruined."

She turned back toward the door, pausing on the threshold. She looked over her shoulder at Ray. "Take care of yourself, Commander. And try to keep your hands off any more defense contractors. The Pentagon gets nervous when you get active."

"I'm just a mechanic, Evelyn," Ray replied smoothly, his hands returning to his pockets. "I only fix broken things."

Evelyn chuckled, shook her head, and stepped out into the afternoon sunlight, her black sedan disappearing down the long, gated drive.

I looked at Ray, feeling a sudden wave of overwhelming gratitude washed over me. "It's really over, isn't it?"

"The fight is over, Clara," Ray said gently, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. "Now, your life begins."
