Chapter 3 - The First Wave

At 12:00 PM sharp, I pressed Publish.
The article went live across my syndicated network, firing directly into the email inboxes of three point two million subscribers, simultaneously auto-posting to my verified social media profiles with a combined following of six million people.
I didn't attach a dramatic photo of myself crying or a generic image of baby feet. I attached a high-resolution scan of the divorce document’s cover page, explicitly highlighting the clause where Ryan demanded a permanent gag order, alongside a photo of the luxury luggage Ryan and Madison had packed for their spontaneous trip to Aspen.
Within four minutes, the internet exploded.
The commentary didn't trickle in; it erupted like a broken dam. My comment section breached fifty thousand messages in the first fifteen minutes.
"A scarecrow?! He called the mother of his newborn triplets a scarecrow?!" one top comment read, garnering twenty thousand likes in seconds.
"Ryan Carter is the CEO of Vance-Carter Dynamics, right? The guy who spent last month on Forbes talking about 'work-life integration' and 'family values'?" another user wrote.
By 12:30 PM, the story had been picked up by The Daily Beast, HuffPost, and BuzzFeed. By 1:00 PM, the hashtag #RyanCarterIsAScarecrow had claimed the number one trending spot worldwide on X (formerly Twitter). Women across the globe began posting photos of their postpartum bodies, sharing stories of being discarded by corporate-obsessed partners, creating an unstoppable movement of public outrage centered directly around my husband’s name.
At 1:15 PM, my penthouse doorbell rang.
I opened the door to find Arthur Pendelton—Chicago’s most formidable high-stakes family law attorney, dispatched personally by Harrison Vance. Behind him stood two junior associates carrying thick leather briefcases and a court reporter.
"Mrs. Carter," Arthur said, taking off his fedora and stepping inside with sharp, military efficiency. "Harrison Vance informed me of your situation. He also mentioned you possess documentation regarding Ryan’s unauthorized offshore licensing transfers."
"I do, Mr. Pendelton," I said, stepping aside to let them enter. "They are backed up on an encrypted hard drive in my safe."
"Excellent," Arthur smiled, a cold, predatory gleam in his eyes. "Ryan Carter’s legal team drafted a document assuming you were an isolated, unrepresented victim of post-partum exhaustion. They made a fatal tactical error. By 2:00 PM today, I will file a counter-petition in the Cook County Circuit Court alleging financial fraud, marital abandonment, and extreme mental cruelty. We will seek temporary total control of all liquid marital assets, an immediate injunction freezing his corporate stock options, and exclusive occupancy of this penthouse."
"What about the gag order he tried to force on me?" I asked, guiding them into the dining room where the triplets were sleeping quietly in their cribs.
Arthur chuckled, pulling a set of legal forms from his briefcase. "My dear, after the article you published an hour ago, that gag order is a burnt scrap of paper. Ryan Carter’s brand isn't just damaged; it is currently incinerating on a national stage."
Right on cue, my phone began to vibrate violently against the dining table.
The screen displayed an incoming video call from an unknown private number out of Aspen, Colorado.
I picked up the phone, answered, and set it on the table, switching the display to speaker mode.
Ryan’s face appeared on the high-definition screen. He was standing inside the VIP lounge of the Aspen private airport. His pristine composure was entirely gone. His hair was disheveled, his face flushed deep red with fury, and behind him, Madison was frantically refreshing her iPad, her face pale with terror.
"Emily!" Ryan screamed, his voice cracking with unbridled rage. "What the hell did you just publish online?! Have you lost your mind?!"

I looked at his furious face on the screen, my expression as smooth and serene as still water.
"Hello, Ryan," I said softly. "How is the weather in Aspen?"
