Chapter 7 - The Collapse of Vance-Carter

The fallout from the live CBS broadcast was catastrophic.
By 9:00 AM, the video clip of Ryan’s recorded voice had circulated over fifty million times across TikTok, Instagram, and X. Major corporate sponsors began pulling their contracts from Vance-Carter Dynamics in real-time. Tech giants who had scheduled multi-million-dollar integration deals issued formal statements severing all association with Ryan Carter.
By 10:30 AM, the board of directors at Vance-Carter Dynamics convened an emergency virtual meeting.
Harrison Vance, operating with the financial evidence I had provided the previous evening, presented the offshore account ledgers to the board members. Within forty-five minutes, the board voted unanimously to terminate Ryan Carter as Chief Executive Officer for severe breach of fiduciary duty, financial fraud, and catastrophic reputational damage.
At 1:00 PM, Ryan arrived at the Vance-Carter corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago, hoping to gain access to his executive office.
He was met at the glass doors of the skyscraper by four armed private security guards and two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department.
I watched the live news coverage from my couch while feeding Leo his bottle. The television screen displayed a news helicopter hovering above the corporate building, capturing high-resolution footage of Ryan Carter being refused entry to his own company. His navy suit was crumpled, his face wild with panic as he screamed at the security personnel who barred his path.
Beside him, Madison Vance was crying hysterically as three reporters pushed microphones into her face, asking her if she was aware of the federal tax evasion charges currently being prepared against her family trusts.
An hour later, Ryan’s personal legal team called Arthur Pendelton.
The arrogance was entirely gone. His high-priced attorneys were now desperately begging for a settlement conference.
"They are offering everything, Emily," Arthur reported over the phone, his tone rich with satisfaction. "Ryan is willing to sign over the penthouse, transfer fifty percent of his personal liquid assets immediately, waive all custody disputes, and agree to a generous child support structure—if you agree to stop releasing audio recordings and drop the financial audit."
I took a sip of water, looking out the window at the vast, cold beauty of Lake Michigan.
"Tell them no," I said plainly.
Arthur paused on the line. "No?"
"No," I repeated firmly. "He offered me a predatory agreement when he thought I was weak. He tried to hide marital assets, attempted to steal my voice, and insulted my children’s mother. We proceed with the full forensic audit, Arthur. We let the Securities and Exchange Commission complete their investigation. And we take this case to trial."

"You want to go to trial?" Arthur asked, a slow, approving grin spreading through his voice.
"I want every single detail of his deception exposed under sworn oath," I said. "He wanted an image, Arthur. I am going to make sure the world sees his complete, undeniable portrait."
