Part 13 The Person Who Was There That Night

The recording stopped.
But nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Arthur Whitmore’s final words stayed in the room like a warning.
“My death was not an accident.”
Caleb stared at the small device in his hand.
His fingers were shaking.
Not because he was afraid.
Because he was exhausted.
Years of unanswered questions.
Years of believing his father abandoned him.
Years of believing his mother was hiding things because she didn’t trust him.
And now…
another secret.
Another missing piece.
Adrian was the first to speak.
“That’s impossible.”
His voice was low.
“I searched every report. Every investigation. Every witness statement.”
He looked at Eleanor.
“You said the shooting was the end.”
Eleanor looked devastated.
“I thought it was.”
Caleb turned slowly.
“You thought?”
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know everything.”
That answer hurt.
Because even now, nobody seemed to know the whole truth.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Play the recording again.”
Caleb pressed the button.
Static.
Then Arthur’s voice returned.
But this time, there was something different.
Fear.
Not the fear of a man losing power.
The fear of a man who knew something terrible.
“My son…”
Arthur paused.
“If you hear this, I need you to understand something.”
The room became silent.
“The people closest to you may not be the ones you should trust.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Because she knew those words were meant for her.
Not as an accusation.
As a warning.
Arthur continued.
“Marcus is dangerous.”
Everyone looked at Marcus.
But Arthur’s next words changed everything.
“However, Marcus is not the only person responsible.”
Caleb froze.
The recording continued.
“There is someone inside our family who helped him.”
The room went completely still.
Even Logan looked surprised.
Eleanor whispered:
“No…”
Caleb’s eyes narrowed.
“Dad knew.”
The recording played on.
“I spent years believing betrayal always came from strangers.”
Arthur’s voice became softer.
“I was wrong.”
A pause.
“Sometimes betrayal comes from the person who knows exactly where to hurt you.”
The recording ended.
Again.
Silence.
Then—
The archive door suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
The hidden room locked automatically.
Thomas rushed to the door.
“It’s sealed.”
Caleb stepped forward.
“What?”
Thomas checked the mechanism.
“It’s an old security system. Arthur designed it.”
Eleanor looked around.
“He trapped us?”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Arthur didn’t trap people.”
He looked at the walls.
“He protected secrets.”
Suddenly, a screen hidden in the wall turned on.
Everyone jumped.
A video appeared.
Arthur.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting at the same desk.
Caleb stopped breathing.
His father was alive in the recording.
Not physically.
But enough.
Arthur looked directly into the camera.
“If this message is playing…”
He sighed.
“Then the truth has finally become unavoidable.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“Dad…”
His voice cracked.
Arthur continued.
“I know you have questions.”
A small sad smile appeared.
“I know you may be angry.”
He looked down.
“You have every right.”
Caleb wiped his eyes.
Arthur continued.
“I failed many people.”
The confession shocked everyone.
“I built an empire but ignored the damage left behind.”
He looked toward the camera.
“Power creates enemies.”
“Pride creates blindness.”
“And fear creates monsters.”
The words hit Eleanor.
Because they described all of them.
Arthur continued:
“The night I was shot, I discovered the final betrayal.”
He paused.
“Someone I trusted had been working with Marcus for years.”
Caleb’s heart raced.
“Who?”
The video continued.
“I never revealed the name because I needed proof.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“And because revealing it too early would have put Caleb in danger.”
The room held its breath.
Then Arthur said:
“The person who helped Marcus was…”
The screen suddenly glitched.
Static covered his face.
The audio distorted.
Everyone stared.
“No,” Thomas said.
“The file is corrupted.”
Caleb hit the controls.
“Fix it.”
Thomas tried.
Nothing.
The message skipped.
Then Arthur’s voice returned.
But the sentence was broken.
“...the person… is someone… you know…”
Static.
“...someone who…”
The video shut off.
Everyone panicked.
“Wait!”
Caleb hit the button repeatedly.
Nothing.
Then the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
A sound came from behind them.
A quiet click.
A door opening.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
Holding a flashlight.
The beam moved across their faces.
And stopped on Caleb.
A familiar voice spoke.
“I was hoping you would never find this room.”
Caleb froze.
Because he knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who had been beside him all along.
Someone everyone trusted.
Someone they never suspected.
The flashlight lowered.
And the person stepped forward.
Eleanor whispered in horror:
“No…”
Because the person standing there was…
Thomas.
The family butler.
The man who had served Arthur for thirty years.
The man who knew every secret in the Whitmore mansion.
Thomas looked at them with tears in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Caleb.”
He held something in his hand.
A second recording device.
“The truth was never supposed to come out this way.”
Caleb stared.
“Thomas…”
His voice was broken.
“Were you the one who betrayed my father?”
Thomas closed his eyes.
And after thirty years of silence…
May you like
he finally answered:
“Yes.”
