Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle

The Whitmore Mansion sat high on a cliff overlooking the ocean, protected by high wrought-iron gates, motion sensors, and a team of private security guards. It was a fortress designed to keep the world out.

To me, it was a target with too many glass windows.

By 2:00 AM, I had bypassed the outer perimeter sensors using a simple signal repeater that cloned the head guard’s keycard frequency. I moved across the manicured lawns like a shadow, completely invisible to the patrolling guards whose routines were far too predictable.

Inside the third-floor recreation room, Tyler Whitmore sat on a plush leather sofa, playing video games on a massive wall-mounted screen. A half-empty bottle of expensive scotch sat on the table beside him. He was completely oblivious to the world around him, feeling safe inside his family's multi-million-dollar sanctuary.

I stepped out from the darkness of the balcony doorway and stood behind his couch.

"You should hold your controller higher," I said quietly. "Your left side is wide open."

Tyler jumped a foot into the air, dropping his controller onto the carpet. He spun around, his face flushed with alcohol and sudden panic. "Who the fuck are you? How did you get in here? Guards! Security!"

"They won't hear you, Tyler," I said, walking slowly around the couch. "The internal intercom system has been disabled."

"My father will kill you!" he shouted, backing away toward the corner of the room, his voice rising in pitch. "Do you know who my family is? We own this city!"

"Your family owns paper," I said, standing three feet away from him. "They own stocks, bonds, and real estate. But right now, in this room, none of that exists. Right now, it's just you and the father of the girl whose face you helped smash into concrete."

Tyler’s eyes widened as realization struck him. The arrogance that had sustained him his entire life evaporated in an instant, replaced by raw, unadulterated terror. "It... it was Ethan’s idea! I didn't even hit her! I was just standing there! I swear to God, I didn't touch her!"

"You watched," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made the glass windows subtly vibrate. "You held her arms while Ethan swung. You laughed while she bled."

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Tyler fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face as he held up his hands defensively. "We'll pay for everything! My dad will pay for her medical bills! We'll give her millions! Just don't hurt me!"

"Money cannot fix a broken jaw, Tyler," I said, reaching down and grasping him by the collar of his designer shirt, pulling him up until his eyes were level with mine. "And it certainly cannot fix what you broke inside her mind."

I didn't strike him. Striking him would have been too merciful. Instead, I pressed a small, cold USB drive into his trembling palm.

"On this drive is a complete recording of your confession tonight," I whispered. "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, you, Ethan, and Brandon will walk into the central police station. You will confess to every crime you committed against my daughter. You will plead guilty, and you will accept whatever sentence the court gives you."

"And if we don't?" Tyler sobbed, shaking uncontrollably.

"If you don't," I said softly, "I will return. And next time, I won't come as a father."
