Chapter 8 - The Ghost Resets

By 4:00 PM, the storm had fully arrived.

Ethan Cole was arrested at his father’s penthouse by federal marshals, led out in handcuffs while news cameras captured every second of his disgrace. Brandon Hale and Tyler Whitmore surrendered themselves at the precinct an hour later, their legal defenses completely collapsed under the weight of their own recorded confessions and financial ruined families.

The untouchable empire of privilege had been completely demolished in less than twenty-four hours.

I stood by the window of Lily’s private hospital room, watching the rain strike the glass paneling. The quiet of the room was interrupted only by the rhythmic beep of her heart monitor.

The door softly opened, and Dr. Vance stepped inside, checking her vitals with a warm, approving smile.

"She’s making remarkable progress, Mr. Walker," the doctor said softly. "The swelling has reduced significantly. In a few weeks, with proper physical therapy, she will be able to speak again. She’s going to make a full recovery."

"Thank you, Doctor," I said softly, keeping my posture relaxed, my hands folded politely in front of me.

The doctor left the room, closing the door behind him.

I sat down on the chair beside Lily’s bed and picked up her hand once more. Her eyelids fluttered open, clearer this time, free of the heavy morphine fog.

She looked at me, her eyes filled with gentle warmth and safety. Through her wired jaw, she managed to produce a faint, muffled sound.

"Dad..."

I smiled, leaning down to lightly kiss her forehead. "Rest, sweetheart. Everything has been taken care of. The bad men are gone. They'll never hurt anyone ever again."

She closed her eyes, releasing a long, peaceful breath, and drifted back to sleep.

My encrypted flip phone vibrated silently in my pocket. I stepped out into the quiet balcony to answer it.

"It's done," Marcus reported over the secure line. "Thomas Cole’s assets have been frozen. Senator Hale has officially resigned. The three boys are being held without bail. Your name was never mentioned in any of the court documents or media reports. The Ghost remains a shadow."

"Good," I said, looking out at the city skyline as the dark rain clouds began to part, letting in small streaks of golden afternoon sunlight. "Close down the servers, Marcus. Wipe the encrypted channels. Burn the phones."

"Are you going back into retirement, Daniel?" Marcus asked gently.

May you like

"I never left," I replied smoothly. "I'm just a father taking care of his daughter."

I snapped the flip phone in half, dropping the broken pieces into a metal trash bin, and stepped back inside the warm, quiet room to watch over my daughter as she slept.
