Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Police Chief Miller stood in the corridor outside Lily’s ICU room, adjusting his tie nervously. He held a clipboard with a pre-typed statement designed to clear Ethan Cole and his friends of all involvement.
"I just need five minutes with the girl, nurse," Miller insisted, pushing past the attending staff. "It's official police business."
"She is heavily sedated, Chief," the nurse argued. "She cannot sign anything."
"I'll be the judge of that," Miller said, reaching for the door handle.
Before his fingers touched the metal latch, a heavy hand descended upon his shoulder, gripping it with the force of a hydraulic press. Miller was spun around effortlessly and dragged backwards into a vacant maintenance closet.
The door slammed shut, plunging the small room into darkness.
"What the hell—" Miller began, reaching for his sidearm.
I grabbed his wrist, squeezing until he cried out in pain and dropped the pistol onto the concrete floor. I slammed him against the wall, holding him pinned by his throat.
"Chief Miller," I said, my voice dangerously low. "You took fifty thousand dollars from Evelyn Hale to make my daughter's police report vanish."
Miller choked, his eyes wide with terror as he struggled against my grip. "Who... who are you?"
"I am the man who knows about your offshore bank account in the Caymans," I whispered. "The one you opened six years ago to deposit bribes from the local cartels."
Miller’s face went pale. "How... how could you know that?"
"Because I created the bank you used," I said coldly. "Now, you have two choices. Option one: You walk into that room, put your badge on the table, and issue an immediate arrest warrant for Ethan Cole, Brandon Hale, and Tyler Whitmore."
"And... and option two?" Miller gasped, struggling for air.
"Option two," I said, leaning in until my lips were inches from his ear, "is that I release your financial records to the FBI, the state prosecutor, and the cartel members who think you've been stealing from them. You won't last twenty-four hours in a federal penitentiary."
I released his throat. Miller slid down the wall, gasping violently for breath, clutching his chest.

"The... the warrants will be issued in ten minutes," Miller wheezed, looking up at me like I was a demon summoned from the deep.
"Good choice," I said, turning the door handle. "Make sure you include the charge of attempted murder."
