PART 1: THE BOY WHO BEGGED HIS FATHER TO CUT OFF HIS ARM

"Cut it off!"

The scream echoed through the entire second floor of the Whitmore mansion.

It was so violent that the housekeeper in the hallway dropped the silver tray she was carrying.

The sound of metal hitting marble was almost as shocking as the boy's voice.

Rain hammered against the tall windows.

Lightning flashed across the dark Texas sky.

For one brief second, the entire mansion turned white.

And inside the child's bedroom...

Grant Whitmore stopped breathing.

He had been at a charity dinner only minutes earlier.

His white dress shirt was still unbuttoned at the collar.

His shoes were missing because he had rushed upstairs barefoot.

But none of that mattered.

Because his ten-year-old son was on the floor.

Trying to destroy his own arm.

Caleb's right arm was trapped inside a fresh white cast from his wrist to his elbow.

He was hitting it against the wooden bedpost again and again.

Like he was trying to escape something only he could feel.

"Caleb!"

Grant grabbed him.

The boy fought with everything he had.

His small body shook violently.

His blond hair stuck to his forehead.

His face was covered in tears and sweat.

"Dad!"

"Please!"

"Please cut it off!"

Grant froze.

"What?"

"Something is inside!"

Caleb screamed.

"It's biting me!"

Behind him, standing in the doorway...

Was Marissa.

Grant's new wife.

She wore a silk robe and looked completely untouched by the chaos around her.

She didn't run toward Caleb.

She didn't ask if he was okay.

She simply watched.

Arms crossed.

Expression controlled.

Almost annoyed.

"Grant," she said calmly.

"Don't let him damage the cast."

"The doctor warned us."

"If the fracture moves, he could need surgery."

Grant looked at her.

Then back at his son.

Caleb was shaking.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Actually terrified.

"Dad..."

His voice broke.

"She's the reason."

Everyone became silent.

Marissa's face changed.

Only slightly.

But someone noticed.

Ruth Bennett.

The Whitmore family's longtime nanny.

She had worked there since Caleb was a baby.

She had watched him take his first steps.

She had held him during nightmares.

She had stayed beside him when his mother, Anna, was dying.

Ruth stepped into the room.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Her voice was calm.

But firm.

"That child is suffering."

Marissa turned.

"Ruth, don't exaggerate."

"He's been in pain for days."

"Broken bones hurt."

Ruth looked at the cast.

Then at Caleb.

"This isn't normal."

Marissa's expression hardened.

"And you're a doctor now?"

"No."

Ruth replied.

"But I've raised children."

"I know when a child is scared."

"And I know when a child is begging for help."

Grant looked between them.

Confusion filled his face.

Because both women sounded certain.

And he didn't know who to believe.

He looked down.

"Caleb."

"Tell me exactly what happened."

The boy looked toward Marissa.

Fear crossed his face.

"She came into my room."

"When I was sleeping."

"She touched my cast."

"And she said..."

His voice trembled.

"She said Mommy can't protect me anymore."

Marissa immediately stepped back.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Perfectly timed.

Perfectly placed.

"Grant..."

She whispered.

"This is what I was afraid of."

Caleb stared at her.

"You're lying!"

Marissa covered her mouth.

Like his words had wounded her.

"He doesn't accept me."

"He wants you to hate me."

"He wants me gone."

Grant felt his chest tighten.

Because that was exactly what everyone had told him.

For four days.

Caleb had complained about the cast.

For four days.

He had cried.

Refused food.

Barely slept.

And every time...

Marissa had an explanation.

"He misses his mother."

"He is struggling."

"He is acting out."

Even the therapist had suggested Caleb might be experiencing emotional trauma after losing Anna.

Grant wanted to believe that.

Because the alternative was terrifying.

That his son was telling the truth.

And the woman he married...

Was hurting him.

Caleb grabbed the cast again.

"Dad, please!"

"Believe me!"

Grant closed his eyes.

He loved his son.

But he was exhausted.

Confused.

Afraid.

And Marissa knew exactly where to push.

"If he damages his arm..."

She said softly.

"You'll blame yourself forever."

"Just restrain him until he calms down."

Ruth immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She had never challenged Grant before.

"Do not do that."

Marissa turned cold.

"Grant, you are his father."

The words hit him.

Because that was his weakness.

Being a good father.

Protecting Caleb.

So he made the choice he would regret.

He took a belt from the closet.

And secured Caleb's left wrist to the bed.

Not tightly.

Not enough to injure him.

But enough to stop him moving.

The room became silent.

Caleb stopped fighting.

He only looked at his father.

Not angry.

Not screaming.

Just broken.

"You picked her."

Grant swallowed.

"Caleb..."

"I'm protecting you."

The boy shook his head.

Tears rolled down his face.

"No."

His voice was barely a whisper.

May you like

"You're helping her."

And those words stayed in Grant's mind long after the room went quiet.
