PART 3: THE CAST THAT REVEALED THE TRUTH

The doctor arrived twenty minutes later.
But by then...
The entire atmosphere inside the Whitmore mansion had changed.
Grant stood beside Caleb's bed.
His hands were clenched.
His eyes never left his son.
Not because he was angry.
Because he was terrified.
Terrified that he had failed him.
Terrified that for four days, Caleb had been begging for help...
And everyone had explained his pain away.
Including him.
Dr. Harris entered the room carrying his medical bag.
He had treated the Whitmore family for years.
He smiled at first.
Then saw everyone's faces.
And the smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
Ruth stepped forward.
"The cast needs to come off."
Dr. Harris looked at Caleb.
Then at Grant.
"Did something happen?"
Grant answered quietly.
"My son says something is inside."
The doctor frowned.
"Caleb has been anxious since the accident."
Marissa immediately nodded.
"Exactly."
But Ruth interrupted.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"Look at him."
She pointed at Caleb.
"Really look."
The doctor turned.
And for the first time...
He stopped thinking about the explanation.
He watched the child.
The shaking hands.
The pale face.
The way Caleb protected the cast like it was hurting him.
Not like he hated it.
Like he was afraid of it.
Dr. Harris slowly approached.
"Caleb."
"I'm going to examine the cast."
The boy looked at his father.
Grant stepped closer.
"I'm here."
A small sentence.
But it mattered.
Caleb nodded.
The doctor began checking the cast.
At first, everything looked normal.
Then he noticed something.
A faint smell.
Chemical.
Unusual.
He looked up.
"Who was in charge of his medication?"
Marissa answered quickly.
"I was."
Too quickly.
Grant noticed.
"So?"
The doctor didn't respond.
He carefully examined the inside edge.
Then his expression changed.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
"Yes?"
"I need to remove this immediately."
Marissa stepped forward.
"Doctor, is that necessary?"
The room became still.
Because that question didn't make sense.
A mother would ask if her child was okay.
Not whether the cast should be removed.
Dr. Harris looked at her.
"Mrs. Whitmore."
"Your stepson is in severe distress."
"Yes."
"But..."
His eyes hardened.
"I am no longer sure this is from the injury."
The color drained from her face.
Grant saw it.
Finally.
The first real reaction.
Not sadness.
Not concern.
Fear.
The cast removal began.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The room watched in silence.
Every second felt endless.
When the cast finally came apart...
Something fell onto the white sheets.
A small object.
Wrapped in plastic.
Everyone froze.
Grant stared.
"What is that?"
Nobody answered.
Dr. Harris picked it up carefully.
His face became serious.
"It's a chemical heating pad."
Grant looked confused.

"What?"
The doctor examined it.
"These can generate heat when activated."
Caleb whispered:
"I told you."
His voice broke.
"I told you something was burning."
Grant closed his eyes.
Because his son had been right.
The entire time.
Ruth covered her mouth.
And Marissa...
Said nothing.
That silence said more than words.
Grant slowly turned toward his wife.
"What did you do?"
Marissa immediately shook her head.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"This isn't what you think."
But nobody believed her anymore.
The doctor continued examining Caleb's arm.
"Fortunately, we caught it."
"He has irritation and possible burns."
"But he should recover."
Grant looked at Caleb.
Recovery.
That word almost destroyed him.
Because he realized how close he came to losing his son.
Not because of the accident.
Because he didn't listen.
"Who put it there?"
His voice was low.
Everyone looked at Marissa.
She stepped backward.
"You think it was me?"
Nobody answered.
Because they didn't need to.
Then Ruth spoke.
"I saw something yesterday."
Grant turned.
"What?"
"After you restrained Caleb."
Ruth looked at Marissa.
"She entered his room alone."
Marissa's face hardened.
"You were watching me?"
"No."
Ruth replied.
"I was watching him."
She pointed at Caleb.
"Because someone had to."
That sentence hit Grant harder than anything.
Because it was true.
Someone had to protect his child.
And he hadn't.
Marissa suddenly changed.
The calm mask disappeared.
"You don't understand!"
Everyone froze.
Because it was the first time she sounded angry.
Not innocent.
Angry.
"I was trying to fix everything!"
Grant stared.
"Fix what?"
She laughed bitterly.
"This family."
"That boy."
"Your obsession with him."
The room went silent.
Caleb looked at his father.
And Grant felt something inside him break.
Because now the truth was clear.
Marissa didn't see Caleb as a child who needed love.
She saw him as an obstacle.
The doctor quietly stepped away.
Ruth moved closer to Caleb.
And Grant finally understood.
The woman he trusted...
Had been hurting the one person he promised to protect.
But there was one question left.
May you like
Why?
And the answer would destroy everything.
