PART 2: THE NANNY WHO REFUSED TO BELIEVE THE LIE

The next morning, the Whitmore mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Grant stood outside Caleb's bedroom door for almost five minutes before entering.
He had barely slept.
Every time he closed his eyes...
He saw his son's face.
Not the screaming.
Not the anger.
The disappointment.
The way Caleb looked at him.
Like he had lost the person he trusted most.
When Grant entered the room, Caleb was awake.
Still wearing the cast.
Still pale.
But calmer.
"Hey, buddy."
No answer.
Grant walked closer.
"How are you feeling?"
Caleb looked away.
"Better."
That hurt more than anger.
Because it sounded like he no longer expected help.
Grant sat beside him.
"I'm sorry about last night."
Caleb didn't look at him.
"You didn't believe me."
Grant opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Because he couldn't deny it.
"I was scared."
"So was I."
The answer was simple.
But it destroyed him.
Before Grant could respond...
Ruth entered.
She carried breakfast.
But her eyes immediately went to the cast.
Not Caleb.
The cast.
She placed the tray down.
Then knelt beside him.
"Caleb."
The boy looked at her.
"Does it still hurt?"
He nodded.
"Where?"
"My fingers."
Ruth gently examined his hand.
His fingertips were slightly swollen.
His skin was irritated.
She frowned.
"Did anyone check this this morning?"
Grant looked confused.
"The doctor said—"
"I didn't ask what the doctor said."
Ruth looked at him.
"I asked if anyone checked."
The room went quiet.
Because nobody had.
Everyone had trusted the explanation.
Nobody had looked.
Ruth carefully touched the edge of the cast.
Caleb immediately pulled away.
"See?"
He whispered.
"It hurts."
Ruth's expression changed.
Not fear.
Understanding.
She looked at Grant.
"Something is wrong."
Grant felt his stomach drop.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying this child has been telling the truth."
The words hit the room like a storm.
At that moment...
Marissa appeared in the doorway.
"Are you serious?"
She laughed softly.
"You're accusing me?"
Ruth stood.
"I'm asking questions."
"No."
Marissa replied.
"You are creating suspicion."
Grant looked between them.
Because suddenly...
He remembered something.
The cast had been applied after Caleb's fall.
A simple accident.
That's what everyone said.
But now he wondered...
Why was Marissa so determined to explain everything?
Why did she always speak before Caleb could?
Why did she always know exactly what to say?
Ruth looked at Caleb.
"Did anything feel different after she touched it?"
The boy hesitated.
Then whispered:
"She poured something."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Grant stepped forward.
Caleb's eyes filled with fear.
"I don't know what."
"But after that..."
"It burned."
Marissa immediately shook her head.
"This is ridiculous."
But Ruth didn't look at her.
She looked at the cast.
And suddenly...
She noticed something.
A tiny crack near the bottom.
Almost invisible.
But there.
"Grant."
Her voice changed.
"Call the doctor."
"Now."
For the first time...
Marissa looked afraid.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Because Ruth saw it.

And she knew.

There was something hidden inside that cast.
Something someone didn't want them to find.
