Chapter 4 - The Crack in the Armor

Victoria’s composure shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. “You wouldn't dare,” she hissed, her voice rising in panic. “You will ruin Adrian’s reputation! The press—the board—”
“Adrian ruined his own reputation the moment he raised his hand against me,” I said coldly.
I walked past her into the grand foyer and opened the heavy front doors.
Standing on the porch were two uniformed police officers, accompanied by Detective Miller—a sharp-eyed woman in a sharp blazer—and my attorney, Sarah Vance. Behind them stood two men in suits holding legal envelopes: court couriers.
Detective Miller took one look at my bruised face and her expression hardened instantly. “Mrs. Holloway? I’m Detective Miller. We received a distress call and an emergency filing from Attorney Vance.”
“Thank you for coming so quickly, Detective,” I said, stepping aside. “Please, come in.”
Victoria rushed into the foyer, her hands fluttering in frantic desperation. “Officers, this is a terrible misunderstanding! My daughter-in-law had a fall last night—she’s emotionally unstable! She’s trying to blackmail my son because of a family disagreement!”
Sarah Vance stepped forward, opening a thick leather briefcase. “Detective Miller, I have provided your team with time-stamped audio recordings captured by the home security system last night, as well as the initial medical evaluation photos submitted by my client this morning. Furthermore, we have an emergency restraining order signed by Judge Michaels, effective immediately.”
Detective Miller looked at Victoria, then back at me. “Mrs. Holloway, where is your husband right now?”
“He’s at his firm downtown,” I replied calmly. “Holloway Capital Management.”
“Is he aware you’ve made this report?”
“No,” I said with a faint smile. “He thinks I’m sitting in the dining room, wearing the makeup he bought me, apologizing to his mother.”
Victoria grabbed her phone, her fingers trembling violently as she tried to dial Adrian’s number. “I’m calling him right now! This is ridiculous! You evil, ungrateful little bitch—”
“Ma’am, put the phone down,” Detective Miller commanded, stepping between Victoria and me. “If you interfere with an active police investigation, I will arrest you for obstruction right here.”
Victoria froze, her phone trembling in her hand. For the first time in her life, her money and her social status were completely useless. The gilded armor she and her son had worn for decades was cracking, exposing the hollow, desperate predators beneath.
“Sarah,” I said, turning to my lawyer. “Has the emergency freeze been enacted?”
Sarah smiled smoothly. “As of ten minutes ago, the New York State Supreme Court granted our emergency motion. Every bank account, asset fund, and investment portfolio associated with Adrian Holloway and Holloway Capital Management has been frozen pending a full forensic audit. He cannot move a single dollar.”
Victoria let out a choked gasp, clutching her chest. “My... my accounts too?”
“Every single shell company registered under Vanguard Capital,” Sarah replied coldly. “Including the offshore accounts in the Caymans.”
Victoria collapsed onto the foyer bench, all the aristocratic dignity draining out of her, leaving only a terrified, frail old woman who had just realized her empire of lies was crumbling.
Detective Miller turned to her partner. “Officer Davis, stay here with Mrs. Victoria Holloway and secure the premises. Mrs. Holloway,” she looked at me, “I need you to come with me to the station to formalize your statement and have a forensic medical exam conducted by our medical examiner. Then we are going to serve the arrest warrant on your husband at his corporate office.”

I looked back at Victoria, who sat weeping silently on the bench, staring at me with pure hatred.
“Enjoy your stay in my home, Victoria,” I said softly. “It’s the last night you will ever spend here.”
