Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

For a man who had built his entire identity on control, being handcuffed against the glass wall of his own executive board room in front of his wealthiest investors was an absolute, living nightmare.

“Clara!” Adrian screamed, his face pressed flat against the glass, his eyes wide with wild, unbridled fury. “You treacherous bitch! Do you have any idea what you’ve done?! You’ve destroyed everything!”

“No, Adrian,” I said, walking slowly up to him until I was standing inches away from his pinned face. “You destroyed everything the night you thought you could bleed my family dry and use me as a punching bag.”

The investors were already packing their briefcases in a frenzy, shouting into their phones to pull their funds out of Holloway Capital. Chloe Vance was frantically trying to clear files off her laptop until Detective Miller’s partner stepped over and seized her computer as evidence.

“Mrs. Holloway,” Chloe stammered, backing against the wall, her hands shaking. “I... I was just following orders! I didn't know about the assault, I swear!”

I turned to look at Chloe, feeling no anger toward her—only pity. “You knew about the stolen foundation funds, Chloe. You signed off on the false compliance audits. My attorney has the wire receipts with your electronic signature on them.”

Chloe sank into her chair, burying her face in her hands.

Detective Miller pulled Adrian away from the glass. His tailored hair was ruined, his expensive suit wrinkled, and his face red with humiliation. The powerful titan of Wall Street had been reduced to a pathetic, writhing convict in less than ten minutes.

“You won't get a cent!” Adrian hissed as the officers began marching him toward the private elevator. “My lawyers will shred you in court! That house is mine! Every asset is registered under my name!”

“Check your corporate registry, Adrian,” Sarah Vance called out smoothly as the elevator doors prepared to close. “Your mother signed the primary guarantor documents using the Maine estate as collateral. Since that collateral was proven to be acquired through forged power of attorney, ownership of Holloway Capital’s core assets automatically reverts to Clara’s family foundation under the restitution clause.”

Adrian’s eyes widened in horror as the realization hit him. The trap he had built for me had been flipped entirely on him. His mother’s greed and his own arrogance had destroyed him.

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his panicked screams.

I stood in the silent, ruined board room, looking out over the skyline of New York City. For three years, I had felt so small in this city, crushed under the weight of my husband’s wealth and his mother’s cruelty. But standing here now, surrounded by the wreckage of their fake empire, I felt lighter than air.

Sarah walked up beside me, placing a hand gently on my shoulder. “The police are processing him now. The judge set a zero-bail condition due to the severity of the financial fraud charges and the flight risk posed by his offshore accounts. He’ll be spending tonight in a cell at Rikers.”

“And Victoria?” I asked.

“The police in Greenwich have already escorted her off your property,” Sarah smiled. “She tried to take her luxury handbags, but since all assets are frozen, the officers impounded them as potential proceeds of crime. She’s currently staying in a cheap motel near the interstate because her credit cards were declined.”

A sharp, ironic breath escaped my lips. The woman who demanded the master suite of my home was now sleeping on cheap polyester sheets.

“We aren't done yet, Sarah,” I said, turning toward the elevator. “Now we go to the estate and take back what’s mine.”
