PART 4

For the first time in my entire life…

I was afraid of my father.

Not because I thought he would hurt me.

Never that.

But because the man who had always been my protector was standing in front of me with a secret.

A secret big enough to change everything I knew.

“Dad.”

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Tell me.”

Richard Hayes looked away.

That hurt more than any answer could have.

Because my father never avoided my eyes.

Not once.

When I was a child and afraid of thunderstorms, he sat beside my bed until morning.

When I lost my first job, he told me failure was just information.

When my heart was broken before Adrian, he said:

“Never let someone’s rejection make you question your value.”

He was always honest.

Except now.

“What did Adrian mean?”

My father remained silent.

I stepped closer.

“Mom didn’t die in an accident?”

His jaw tightened.

Finally, he sighed.

“Sit down.”

I didn’t.

“I don’t want to sit down.”

My voice shook.

“I want the truth.”

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time, he looked old.

Not weak.

Just tired.

As if he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Your mother’s death was complicated.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Complicated?”

I held up the file.

“My husband tortured me tonight.”

His face darkened.

“He did not deserve to touch you.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“But he knew something about my mother.”

A pause.

“So tell me.”

My father walked to the window.

Outside, the sun was beginning to rise.

The same sunrise that had once meant a new beginning.

Now it felt like the beginning of another war.

“Your mother discovered something.”

“What?”

He turned.

“Financial crimes.”

My heart sank.

“Like Adrian?”

He nodded.

“Bigger.”

I stared at him.

“Mom was investigating someone?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

His silence returned.

And I already knew the answer would hurt.

“Dad.”

Finally, he said:

“The Vale family.”

My breath caught.

Adrian’s family.

Years ago, before Adrian ever entered my life, my mother had been working with my father.

Not just as his wife.

As his partner.

She discovered that the Vale family empire was built on fraud, corruption, and hidden accounts.

She wanted to expose them.

But before she could…

she died.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

My mother died when I was young.

Everyone said it was a car accident.

A rainy road.

A mistake.

My entire childhood memory was built around that story.

“You lied to me.”

My father looked broken.

“I protected you.”

“You lied.”

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

The words froze me.

“Alive?”

He nodded slowly.

“After your mother died, I found evidence someone had tampered with her car.”

My heart pounded.

“Then why didn’t you tell the police?”

“Because the people involved had influence.”

He looked at me.

“Power.”

A pause.

“And you were a child.”

I remembered something.

A memory.

A tiny piece of childhood I never understood.

My mother kneeling in front of me.

Holding my face.

Telling me:

“Promise me something.”

I was young.

I didn’t understand.

“What?”

“Never trust someone just because they say they love you.”

At the time, I thought it was just a mother’s warning.

Now…

I realized she was trying to protect me.

My father opened another file.

“This is what I found after Adrian married you.”

I looked down.

The documents were old.

Very old.

There were names.

Transactions.

Photos.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Vale.

Adrian’s father.

“He knew about your mother.”

My hands went cold.

“And Adrian?”

My father hesitated.

“That’s what I didn’t know.”

I looked up.

“What do you mean?”

“I didn’t know whether Adrian married you because he was following his father’s plan…”

A pause.

“Or because he wanted revenge.”

Everything suddenly connected.

The lies.

The manipulation.

The marriage.

The cruelty.

It wasn’t random.

I wasn’t just a target for money.

I was part of something that started before I was even born.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

From an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

It was Adrian.

In police custody.

Then another image.

Vanessa.

Being questioned.

Then a final message:

You think you know the truth?

Ask who really killed your mother.

My hands trembled.

I looked at my father.

He saw the message.

And his face changed.

“Who sent that?”

I whispered:

“I don’t know.”

Then the door opened.

One of my father’s security guards rushed in.

“Mr. Hayes.”

My father turned.

“What happened?”

The guard looked at me.

Then him.

“Someone broke into the old Vale property.”

My father froze.

“Which property?”

The guard swallowed.

“The one where Victor Vale kept his private records.”

Silence.

My father’s expression became serious.

“They’re looking for evidence.”

I stood.

“Then we go there.”

My father immediately shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I’m done hiding.”

A pause.

“Adrian took three years of my life.”

I picked up the file.

“My mother lost hers.”

I looked directly at him.

“So I’m going to find out the truth.”

My father stared at me.

Then slowly nodded.

Because he understood.

The woman who walked into that marriage believing she was powerless…

was gone.

The woman standing now knew exactly who she was.

And whoever destroyed my mother…

was about to discover something Adrian learned too late.

I was never the victim.

I was the storm they never saw coming.
