PART 5

The old Vale estate had been abandoned for almost ten years.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

From the outside, it looked like a forgotten mansion.

The iron gates were covered in rust.

The garden had grown wild.

The windows were dark.

A place where memories went to die.

But as my father’s car stopped in front of the entrance, I knew one thing.

This place was hiding something.

And whoever broke in tonight wasn’t looking for furniture.

They were looking for the truth.

My father turned off the engine.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

The rain tapped softly against the windshield.

“You don’t have to do this.”

His voice was quiet.

I looked at him.

“Yes, I do.”

He sighed.

“I promised your mother I would protect you.”

I looked at the mansion.

“And she promised me something too.”

My father frowned.

“What?”

I swallowed.

“That she would always tell me the truth.”

Silence.

Because we both knew.

She didn’t get the chance.

Two security guards stood near the entrance.

They had already checked the property.

“Mr. Hayes,” one of them said.

“Someone was here recently.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“How recent?”

“Less than an hour.”

My heart tightened.

They were ahead of us.

The door opened with a long creak.

The inside smelled like dust and old wood.

But beneath it…

something else.

Fresh.

Like someone had recently been here.

Someone who didn’t care about being discovered.

Someone who wanted us to know.

I stepped into the hallway.

Pictures covered the walls.

The Vale family history.

Generations of wealth.

Power.

Influence.

And there it was.

A photo of Victor Vale.

Standing beside my mother.

My blood froze.

“Dad.”

He walked over.

His face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

My fingers moved toward the frame.

“Why was Mom with him?”

My father didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Someone moving.

My father immediately stepped in front of me.

“Stay behind me.”

But I wasn’t the same woman who needed protection.

Not anymore.

Still, I listened.

Because there was a difference between being brave and being reckless.

The guards moved upstairs.

A few seconds later—

“Clear!”

Nothing.

The second floor was empty.

But on a desk in one of the rooms…

was a single envelope.

With my name on it.

EMMA.

My stomach dropped.

“How did they know I would come?”

My father picked it up carefully.

“Don’t touch it.”

A guard opened it using gloves.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

My hands started shaking.

Because I knew before I even read it.

It was my mother’s.

Emma,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

My eyes blurred.

My father looked away.

Giving me a moment.

The letter continued.

Your father will tell you I died because of an accident.

He believes that story protected you.

But the truth is more dangerous.

I stopped.

My heart pounding.

I discovered that the Vale family was using my company to hide illegal transactions.

Victor Vale threatened me.

He told me if I exposed him, he would destroy everything I loved.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

But Victor wasn’t the person I feared most.

I froze.

The room felt colder.

The person I feared was someone closer.

My fingers tightened.

Who?

Who could have been close enough?

I continued reading.

Emma, if Adrian Vale ever enters your life…

My breath stopped.

The letter fell slightly in my hands.

My father looked at me.

“What?”

I couldn’t speak.

I forced myself to continue.

Do not believe his kindness.

Do not believe his love.

He knows who you are.

He knows who your father is.

And most importantly…

The next line was written darker.

As if my mother had pressed the pen harder.

He knows what happened to me.

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly…

the nightmare was bigger than Adrian.

Much bigger.

My father took the letter from my hands.

His face turned pale.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“You knew he was dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“But not this.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone looked at it.

My father whispered:

“Don’t answer.”

But I did.

Because I needed answers.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice appeared.

Older.

Cold.

Familiar.

“Emma.”

My blood froze.

I knew that voice.

Even though I hadn’t heard it in years.

“Victor Vale?”

Silence.

Then a low laugh.

“So your father finally told you.”

My grip tightened.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

My heart pounded.

“But I’m not the one you should be afraid of.”

I looked at my father.

“What do you mean?”

Victor’s voice lowered.

“Because the person who betrayed your mother…”

A pause.

“…is standing right beside you.”

My eyes moved slowly toward my father.

“No.”

Victor continued.

“You never knew your father’s biggest secret.”

The call ended.

The room went completely still.

My father looked at me.

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered.

May you like

Was the man who protected me…

also the man who had been lying to me?
