Part 6: The Man Who Thought He Owned Everything

Part 6: The Man Who Thought He Owned Everything

Ethan stood at the bottom of the staircase.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The entire house felt frozen.

The same house where he had once walked proudly.

The same house where he had laughed at me.

The same house where he believed his word was law.

But something was different now.

He was looking at me.

Not as a wife.

Not as someone beneath him.

As an enemy.

And I realized something terrifying.

Ethan was most dangerous when he was losing control.

“Give me the journal, Claire.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

That was always how he was.

The quieter he became, the worse his intentions were.

I held the journal tighter.

“No.”

One word.

But it changed the room.

Because Ethan had spent years training me to obey.

To avoid conflict.

To keep peace.

He didn’t know what happened when someone pushed a person too far.

He didn’t know what happened when fear became exhaustion.

When pain became clarity.

His eyes narrowed.

“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”

I almost laughed.

“Harder?”

I looked at him.

“You hit me yesterday.”

A flicker crossed his face.

Not regret.

Annoyance.

As if I had reminded him of an inconvenient detail.

“You’re still talking about that?”

Margaret gasped.

Even she looked shocked.

Not because she didn’t know who he was.

Because she was hearing him admit it without shame.

I stepped down one stair.

“You came back here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His eyes moved to the journal.

“You already know.”

I shook my head.

“No, Ethan. I know you’re afraid.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

I had spent years studying him.

Learning his moods.

His expressions.

His lies.

“You’re not angry because I found your journal.”

I continued.

“You’re angry because I found proof.”

The silence that followed was enough.

I was right.

He hated being exposed.

Not being guilty.

Being caught.

Ethan took a step forward.

Margaret immediately moved between us.

The woman who had spent years defending him was now protecting me.

“Ethan,” she said.

Her voice trembled.

“Stop.”

He stared at her.

For a second, he looked genuinely surprised.

“Mother?”

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Like he couldn’t believe she had chosen someone else.

Margaret lifted her chin.

“You need to leave.”

His face hardened.

“You’re protecting her?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I should have done it years ago.”

Something broke in his expression.

Not sadness.

Something darker.

Betrayal.

“How dare you?”

Margaret didn’t move.

“How dare I?”

Her voice became stronger.

“I spent my whole life making excuses for you.”

“You raised me.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And that is something I will regret forever.”

The words hit him harder than any accusation.

Because Ethan could handle enemies.

He could handle police.

He could handle strangers.

But disappointment from his mother?

That was different.

He looked back at me.

“You turned her against me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I held up the journal.

“I just showed her who you are.”

His face twisted.

“You think this makes you powerful?”

He laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

There it was.

The threat.

The belief that he still had control.

I looked at him.

“Then tell me.”

He paused.

“What?”

“What am I dealing with?”

The question surprised him.

Because he expected me to fear the answer.

Instead, I wanted it.

For years, Ethan controlled the story.

Now I wanted the entire truth.

He stared at me.

Then slowly smiled.

“You really think you understand everything?”

“No.”

I opened the journal.

“But I’m learning.”

His smile disappeared.

I turned to the marked page.

“The accident plan.”

The color left his face.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Margaret noticed too.

“What accident?” she whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

“Mother.”

His warning tone returned.

But she didn’t back down.

“What accident, Ethan?”

He ignored her.

I watched him carefully.

Because now I knew.

The journal wasn’t just about money.

It was about something bigger.

Something he never wanted discovered.

“You planned something against me.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it?”

I flipped the page.

“You wrote it.”

He looked at the journal.

Then at me.

Then something happened.

Something I never expected.

He smiled.

Not because he was confident.

Because he realized something.

“You think you’re safe because you have that?”

I didn’t answer.

He stepped closer.

“The journal proves a lot.”

His voice lowered.

“But it also proves you had access to my private files.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He continued.

“You were in my office.”

The confusion hit me.

“What are you talking about?”

His smile grew.

“You don’t understand yet.”

Margaret looked between us.

“Ethan, what did you do?”

He ignored her.

“You were always so predictable, Claire.”

The old insult.

The old arrogance.

“You thought you were collecting evidence.”

He pointed at the journal.

“But you never wondered why I made it easy to find.”

My stomach dropped.

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What?”

He laughed softly.

“Did you really think I would leave my entire life’s secrets in a drawer?”

My fingers tightened.

No.

A thought entered my mind.

A horrible thought.

The journal.

The missing files.

The strange way he had kept his office.

Almost too clean.

Almost too obvious.

“You wanted me to find it.”

His smile returned.

Finally.

“You’re smarter than I gave you credit for.”

Margaret stepped back.

“No…”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“You planned this.”

He said nothing.

And that was the answer.

The journal wasn’t just evidence.

It was bait.

A trap.

But why?

Why would he want me to find it?

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I looked down.

One sentence.

My blood ran cold.

CLAIRE, DO NOT TRUST THE JOURNAL. IT WAS CREATED TO DESTROY YOU.

I looked up.

Ethan was watching me.

He knew.

And the worst part?

He looked relieved.

May you like

Because whatever was coming next...

He believed he had already won.
