Part 8: The Secret Everyone Protected

Part 8: The Secret Everyone Protected
Richard Hale stood in the doorway.
Older than I remembered.
More tired.
But his eyes were sharp.
Focused.
The kind of eyes belonging to someone who had spent years watching people lie.
Ethan looked at him like he was looking at a ghost.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Richard smiled.
“That’s interesting.”
He stepped inside.
“Because six months ago, you said the same thing when I found out what you were doing.”
My eyes moved between them.
“What is going on?”
Nobody answered.
And I hated that feeling.
The feeling of standing in a room where everyone knew the truth except me.
I had spent my entire marriage feeling like I was the last person to know.
I was done.
“No more secrets.”
My voice cut through the room.
Everyone looked at me.
“I want answers.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“You deserve them.”
Ethan immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.”
I turned toward Ethan.
“Why?”
He stopped.
“Because he’s lying.”
I looked at Richard.
“Is he?”
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he placed the folder on the table.
Then he looked at me.
“Your father was investigating Ethan.”
My heart sank.
“My father?”
Richard nodded.
“Six months ago, your father discovered irregularities in Blackwood Holdings.”
I remembered.
My father.
A respected judge.
A man who believed rules mattered.
A man who taught me that people revealed themselves through their choices.
“He told me Ethan was dangerous.”
My voice became quiet.
Richard looked surprised.
“He told you?”
I nodded.
“He warned me.”
A bitter smile appeared on my face.
“But I defended my husband.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“That’s exactly what Ethan expected.”
The room became silent.
I felt the pain of that sentence.
Because it was true.
Ethan knew me.
He knew I wanted to believe in him.
He knew I valued loyalty.
He knew I would protect my marriage.
He used the best parts of me against me.
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
“You father discovered Ethan was moving company funds.”
I looked down.
“The same thing the investigator found.”
“Yes.”
Richard nodded.
“But your father found something else.”
“What?”
He looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“He found out Ethan wasn’t planning to disappear with the money.”
Ethan’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Richard continued.
“He was planning to frame someone else.”
My breathing stopped.
“Who?”
Nobody spoke.
I already knew.
I just didn’t want to say it.
Richard’s eyes softened.
“You.”
The word hit me like a physical blow.
“No.”
Ethan immediately said:
“Richard, stop.”
But it was too late.
The truth was already coming out.
Richard opened another document.
“Ethan created a trail of evidence.”
He placed papers on the table.
“Your accounts.”
“Your computer.”
“Your access records.”
I stared.
My hands became cold.
“He was building a case against me.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
I looked at Ethan.
“Why?”
For the first time, I wasn’t angry.
I was confused.
A person who hates you can hurt you.
But a person you loved destroying you?
That was something different.
“Why me?”
Ethan looked away.
That was the answer.
But Richard spoke.
“Because Ethan knew nobody would suspect you.”
I felt tears forming.
Not from weakness.
From understanding.
“My reputation.”
“Yes.”
Richard continued.
“Your family name. Your clean record. Your history of helping others.”
He looked at me.
“You were the perfect person to blame.”
The room felt like it was spinning.
Margaret looked at Ethan with horror.
“You planned to destroy your own wife?”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Everyone needs someone to take responsibility.”
The words came out so casually.
Like he was discussing business.
Not my life.
Not my future.
Not everything I sacrificed.
I stared at him.
“You really don’t understand, do you?”
He looked at me.
“What?”
I shook my head.
“You’re not even sorry.”
Silence.
Because he wasn’t.
Not really.
Richard walked closer.
“There’s more.”
I looked at him.
“More?”
He nodded.
“Your father discovered the plan.”
My heart tightened.
“What happened to him?”
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation scared me more than the answer.
“Tell me.”
Richard looked at Ethan.
“Ethan confronted him.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“No.”
“He threatened him.”
“No.”
“He wanted the evidence destroyed.”
I looked at Ethan.
“Did you hurt my father?”
His face changed.
A tiny reaction.
But enough.
“You’re lying.”
His voice was colder now.
But there was something beneath it.
Fear.
Richard reached into the folder.
Then pulled out a small device.
“A recording.”
My entire body went still.
“What recording?”
Richard looked at me.
“Your father left it with me.”
Ethan moved instantly.
Too fast.
He stepped forward.
“Give me that.”
Richard stepped back.
And suddenly everyone saw it.
Ethan wasn’t pretending anymore.
He was desperate.
“Ethan.”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“What did you do?”
He ignored her.
His eyes were fixed on the device.
Richard pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A voice I knew better than anyone.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
But clear.
“If you are hearing this, it means I was right about Ethan.”
My knees almost gave out.
I covered my mouth.
My father continued.
“Claire, I need you to know something.”
A pause.
“I tried to protect you.”
Tears filled my eyes.
Because hearing him after all this time...
hurt.
“Ethan is not who he appears to be.”
The recording continued.
“He knows about this message. He knows I discovered the truth.”
A sound in the background.
A door.
Then my father’s voice became urgent.
“If anything happens to me, do not trust—”
The recording suddenly cut.
Static.
Silence.
Richard looked at me.
“The file was damaged.”
My heart raced.
“Do not trust who?”
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
Quietly.
Almost calmly.
“The message was incomplete.”
I looked at him.
“And you know who he meant.”
He didn’t respond.
Because he did.
The front door suddenly opened again.
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped inside.
Someone I recognized from old family photographs.
Someone who had been missing from my life for years.
My aunt.
My father’s sister.
She looked directly at me.
And her first words were:
“Claire, your father wasn’t the only one who discovered Ethan’s secret.”
She held a second folder.
“And I know who he was trying to protect you from.”
Everyone froze.
May you like
Because she wasn’t looking at Ethan.
She was looking at Margaret.
