Part 9: The Secret Margaret Buried

Part 9: The Secret Margaret Buried
Nobody moved.
Not Ethan.
Not Richard.
Not even Margaret.
My aunt, Evelyn, stood in the doorway holding the folder tightly against her chest.
Her eyes were fixed on Margaret.
Not with anger.
Not with hatred.
With disappointment.
The kind that only comes from knowing someone for a lifetime.
I looked between them.
“What does my aunt mean?”
Margaret’s face had changed.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect expression.
The controlled emotions.
Everything disappeared.
“Margaret?”
My voice was quieter now.
But everyone heard it.
She didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Because silence was an answer.
“You knew something.”
Margaret slowly sat down.
Her hands shook.
“I knew pieces.”
Ethan immediately turned toward her.
“Mother.”
She ignored him.
For the first time, she ignored him.
“I knew your father was investigating Ethan.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“You knew?”
She looked at me.
“I found out months ago.”
The room became heavy.
“You let me stay with him?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I thought I could fix it.”
I stared at her.
“Fix it?”
My voice cracked.
“You thought you could fix the man who was destroying my life?”
She lowered her head.
“I was wrong.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You were wrong years ago.”
Margaret looked at her.
And something passed between them.
A history I didn’t understand.
“You knew too,” Margaret whispered.
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“I knew what your husband was.”
My eyes widened.
“Your husband?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“My late husband.”
I froze.
Because everyone was talking about Ethan.
But suddenly I realized something.
The darkness didn’t begin with Ethan.
It started before him.
Margaret continued.
“Ethan learned from his father.”
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
He opened his folder.
“Blackwood Holdings wasn’t originally Ethan’s idea.”
The room went silent.
“It was his father’s system.”
Margaret whispered:
“The manipulation. The hidden accounts. The fake companies.”
She looked sick.
“I thought when his father died, it ended.”
Evelyn laughed sadly.
“But you never asked why Ethan was so good at it.”
I looked at Ethan.
He stood still.
Silent.
Because every word exposed him.
Richard placed another document on the table.
“Ethan didn’t create the plan.”
My stomach tightened.
“Then who did?”
Nobody answered.
And then I saw Margaret looking at herself in the reflection of the window.
Like she was seeing someone she didn’t recognize.
Finally, she spoke.
“I did.”
The words felt impossible.
“What?”
I stared at her.
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“I helped Ethan hide the first evidence.”
Ethan looked shocked.
Even he hadn’t expected that.
“Mother…”
She looked at him.
“I thought I was protecting my son.”
Her voice broke.
“But I was protecting a monster.”
Nobody spoke.
Because there are moments when the truth is too large.
Too painful.
Too ugly.
To immediately understand.
I stepped back.
“Why?”
She looked at me.
“Because I saw my husband in him.”
That answer confused me.
“And that made you protect him?”
She nodded.
“I spent my entire life believing loyalty meant staying.”
A tear fell.
“I thought leaving meant failure.”
She looked toward the floor.
“So I stayed.”
The pain in her voice was real.
But it didn’t erase what happened.
“You watched him hurt me.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“You knew he was capable of this.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was almost worse.
I turned away.
For a moment, I couldn’t look at any of them.
The people around me.
The family I married into.
The family I trusted.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
Everyone had information.
Everyone except me.
Then Ethan spoke.
“You’re all acting like I’m the only problem.”
Everyone looked at him.
His face was calm again.
Too calm.
“I made mistakes.”
Margaret stared at him.
“Mistakes?”
He ignored her.
“But none of you are innocent.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What are you saying?”
He smiled slightly.
“I’m saying your father had secrets too.”
The room went quiet.
I felt my heart drop.
“No.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Yes.”
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
He turned toward Evelyn.
“Tell her.”
Evelyn froze.
My eyes moved to my aunt.
“What does he mean?”
She looked away.
And that was enough.
Another secret.
Another hidden truth.
I felt something inside me break.
“How many more?”
My voice shook.
“How many more things did everyone decide I couldn’t handle?”
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan stepped forward.
“I wasn’t the only person who used you, Claire.”
My eyes burned.
“Stop.”
“Your father did too.”
“Stop.”
“He knew things about me before you married me.”
I looked at Evelyn.
“Is that true?”
She didn’t answer.
And I knew.
It was true.
My entire life felt like it was collapsing.
My husband.
My family.
My memories.
Everything.
Then Richard suddenly looked toward the window.
His expression changed.
“What is it?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He walked closer.
Looked outside.
Then his face went pale.
“What?”
He turned around.
“We need to leave.”
Nobody moved.
“Why?”
His voice was serious.
“Because the police are not the only people who know Ethan is here.”
A chill went through the room.
“What do you mean?”
Richard looked at Ethan.
And for the first time...
Ethan looked afraid again.
Because whatever was happening...
Even he didn’t expect it.
A car stopped outside.
Then another.
Lights flashed through the windows.
Not police lights.
Different.
Private security.
Armed men.
Ethan’s face changed.
“Impossible.”
Richard looked at him.
“Who are they?”
Ethan whispered:
“The people I was trying to escape from.”
Everyone froze.
The front door shook.
A voice came from outside.
“Ethan Blackwood.”
Silence.
Then:
“You have nowhere left to run.”
I looked at Ethan.
And for the first time...
I understood.
He wasn’t the top of the chain.
He was just another piece.
A piece someone else was willing to sacrifice.
May you like
The door began to open.
And the final truth was about to enter the house.
