Chapter 5 - The Gala Boardroom

The board meeting of the Vance Foundation was scheduled for Tuesday morning—the exact same day Dylan had planned for our triumphant, united-front media appearance with Sierra and Ryan.

Instead of a red carpet, he walked into a war zone.

The executive boardroom on the thirty-fifth floor of Vance Tower was packed with all twelve voting members of the board, corporate legal counsel, and two representatives from the state securities commission.

When Dylan pushed open the mahogany double doors, expecting to find his loyal executive team, he stopped dead in his tracks.

I was sitting at the head of the long obsidian table, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray pantsuit, my back straight, a leather binder open before me.

“What is the meaning of this?” Dylan demanded, striding into the room with his signature corporate intimidation, though a thin sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead. “Why was I not informed of an emergency board session?”

“Because, Mr. Vance,” the lead legal counsel, a sharp-eyed veteran named Arthur Vance (no relation, thankfully), stated coldly, “you are currently facing a formal motion of suspension pending an internal investigation into corporate fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and unauthorized asset diversion.”

Dylan froze. He looked around the table at the faces of men and women he had cultivated as allies for over a decade. Every single one of them avoided his gaze.

“This is absurd,” Dylan scoffed, forcing a strained laugh as he slammed his briefcase onto the table. “Elena, what kind of sick game are you playing? You’re airing our domestic disputes in a corporate boardroom?”

“This isn’t a domestic dispute, Dylan,” I said calmly, standing up and sliding a copy of the forensic audit across the table toward the board members. “This is systematic embezzlement of over 4.2 million dollars in corporate funds, funneled into a private shell company controlled by an unauthorized third party: Sierra Ashford.”

The room erupted into murmurs.

“That’s a lie!” Dylan shouted, losing his composure entirely as he slammed his hand onto the table. “My financial decisions were approved under executive discretion clauses—!”

“Executive discretion does not cover purchasing a four-million-dollar lakefront mansion for your mistress and her dependent without board disclosure or spousal consent,” Arthur interrupted, holding up a certified deed transfer document bearing Dylan’s signature.

Dylan’s face turned the color of ash. He slowly turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of betrayal and absolute hatred.

“You planned this,” he whispered, the words barely audible over the hum of the HVAC system. “You planned all of it.”

“I gave you five years of loyalty, Dylan,” I replied steadily, looking down at him from the head of the table. “I gave you my support, my patience, and a family. You traded all of it the night you let our daughter nearly die while you played hero for someone else's child. This is just the invoice.”

The vote was unanimous.

Suspended from all executive duties, stripped of his voting shares pending litigation, and facing potential criminal indictment for financial fraud, Dylan Vance was ordered to surrender his company keys and vacate the premises within the hour.

As security guards escorted him out of the boardroom, Dylan stopped at the doorway, turning back one last time.

“You’ll regret this, Elena,” he spat, his voice trembling with humiliated rage. “Sierra and Ryan are my real family. When you’re sitting alone in that empty house, remember that you did this.”

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch.

“Enjoy your real family, Dylan,” I replied softly. “Because you’re about to find out how much they love you when you don't have a checkbook to fund them.”
