Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of Grace

He turned around, walked back to his sedan, and got inside.
I watched as he started the engine and pulled away from the curb, his car melting into the golden autumn afternoon light until he was nothing more than a memory fading in the rearview mirror of our lives.
I folded the paper and slipped it into my pocket.
“Mommy?” Haley’s small voice piped up beside me as she tugged gently on my sleeve.
“Yes, baby?” I knelt down, looking into her bright, beautiful eyes.
“Is the bad man gone?”
“He’s gone, sweetie,” I smiled, wrapping my arms around her and burying my face in her curls, breathing in the scent of shampoo and sunshine. “He’s not coming back.”
She beamed, a bright, radiant smile that illuminated the entire front yard. “Good. Can we go feed the ducks at the park now?”
“We can do anything you want, my love,” I said, standing up and taking her small, warm hand in mine.
As we walked down the sidewalk together toward the park, hand in hand, the autumn wind rustled the golden leaves above us, carrying away the dust of the past.

I had survived the falling chandelier. I had survived the betrayal, the ruin, and the ashes of a marriage built on lies.
