Chapter 3 - The Sky Falls

The shockwave from the front entrance detonated through the foyer, shattering every stained-glass window in the grand hall and sending heavy crystal splinters cascading across the Persian rugs.

The dining room descended into immediate, chaotic terror. Servants screamed and dropped silver trays; Victoria Blackwood let out a sharp shriek, clutching her pearl necklace, while Marcus fell backward off his chair, spilling wine all over his trousers.

"What is happening?!" Khloe shrieked, cowering behind Julian, her face pale with sudden fear. "Is it a terrorist attack?!"

Julian stood up violently, pulling a small silver handgun from his desk drawer nearby, his face contorted in rage. "House guards! Secure the foyer! Shoot anyone who enters!"

Outside the mansion, the night sky was no longer dark.

Three massive, pitch-black military transport aircraft—their fuselages completely unmarked except for a single, gleaming silver emblem of a stylized crest holding a sword—hovered thirty feet above the manicured lawns. Their massive twin rotors generated a hurricane-force downdraft that tore up the pristine garden beds, snapped century-old oak trees like matchsticks, and shattered every exterior window of the estate.

Blinding, high-intensity tactical spotlights mounted beneath the helicopters cut through the rain, illuminating the front lawn in stark, daylight-bright white glare.

Dozens of heavy-armored tactical operatives clad in matte-black composite armor dropped down fast-ropes from the aircraft's open bays. They landed on the cobblestone driveway with synchronized, heavy thuds, their high-caliber assault rifles held at ready, lasers cutting through the smoke.

Within twelve seconds, the sixteen private security guards employed by the Blackwood family were disarmed, forced onto their knees in the mud, and secured with heavy zip-ties. They didn't fire a single shot; the absolute, overwhelming tactical superiority of the invading force made resistance equivalent to suicide.

Inside the house, Julian stepped into the ruined foyer, his silver handgun pointed trembling toward the front archway.

"Who the hell are you?!" Julian roared, his voice cracking with panicked fury. "This is private property! I am Julian Blackwood, CEO of the Blackwood Group! You are committing an illegal armed invasion!"

A single figure stepped through the ruined oak front door, walking calmly through the smoke and broken glass.

He was a tall man, over six-foot-four, wearing an impeccable three-piece charcoal suit made of bespoke Italian wool. He held no weapon. He wore no tactical armor. His dark hair was meticulously combed back, and his face looked as though it were sculpted from cold marble. His pale gray eyes swept across the ruined foyer with total, supreme contempt.

Behind him walked two senior officers of the United States Marshal Service and a tall man in a navy suit carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

"Julian Blackwood," Harrison Sterling said softly. His voice wasn't raised, yet it effortlessly cut through the sound of hovering helicopter engines and wailing security alarms.

Julian stared at the man, his brows furrowing in sudden confusion. He recognized the face from international financial magazine covers, but his mind refused to process why such a titan was standing in his destroyed hallway.

"Mr... Mr. Sterling?" Julian stammered, lowering his gun slightly, his voice shaking. "Harrison Sterling? What... why are you here? Why is your private military attacking my home?!"

Harrison didn't answer him. He didn't even look at the gun in Julian's hand. He walked forward with long, deliberate strides, his handmade leather shoes crunching over the broken glass.

"Where is my sister?" Harrison asked quietly.

Julian froze. His mind went completely blank. "Your... your sister? Mr. Sterling, there must be a mistake. We don't have your sister here. We are having a private family dinner—"

CRACK!

Before Julian could finish his sentence, Harrison’s right hand whipped forward with blinding, terrifying speed. His open palm struck Julian square across the face with the force of a sledgehammer.

Julian was lifted completely off his feet, spinning through the air before crashing violently onto the marble floor, his silver handgun clattering away across the floorboards. Blood burst from his nose and lips, splattering across his pristine white tuxedo shirt.

"Julian!" Victoria screamed, rushing out of the dining room alongside Khloe and Marcus. "My son! You struck my son!"

The tactical operatives immediately flooded the foyer, raising their rifles. "DO NOT MOVE!" an operative barked, his red laser dot resting directly on Victoria's forehead.

Victoria froze in terror, her mouth hanging open, her knees shaking so violently she had to hold onto the wall to stay upright.

Harrison pulled a white silk handkerchief from his breast pocket, calmly dabbing a speck of Julian's blood from his knuckles, looking down at the groveling man with absolute disgust.

"I will ask you one more time, insect," Harrison whispered, stepping heavily onto Julian's left hand, crushing his fingers against the marble floor until Julian let out a agonizing scream. "Where is Sloan?"

Julian’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, his mind shattering as the horrifying truth finally pierced through his arrogant skull.

Sloan?

Sloan Sterling?

The penniless, quiet, helpless woman he had treated like a servant for ten years... was Harrison Sterling’s sister?!

"She's... she's in the wine cellar," Marcus squeaked from the corner, his voice high-pitched and hysterical, pointing a trembling finger toward the basement stairs. "The key... the key is on the wall by the kitchen!"

Harrison turned his head slightly toward the tactical commander behind him. "Get her out. Now."

"Sir!" The commander and six operatives sprinted down the service hallway toward the basement steps.

Julian lay on the floor, coughing up blood, his heart hammering against his ribs in pure, unadulterated terror. "Mr. Sterling... please... there's been a terrible misunderstanding! Sloan... Sloan never told me she was a Sterling! She lied to me!"

Harrison looked down at Julian, his gray eyes devoid of any human empathy.

"She didn't lie to you, Julian," Harrison said softly. "She protected you. She hid her crown so a pathetic, small-minded worm like you wouldn't feel inferior standing beside her. And you repaid her by letting a cheap whore tear her down and locking her in the cold."

Khloe Vance, standing behind Victoria, went entirely pale. "Mr. Sterling... please! I didn't know! Sloan attacked me first! Look at my arm!"

Harrison didn't even turn his head to look at Khloe. He simply raised his left hand and made a slight flick of his wrist.

Two female tactical operatives immediately stepped forward, grabbed Khloe by her styled hair, dragged her out onto the porch, and forced her face-down into the wet mud and broken glass.

"No! Julian, save me!" Khloe shrieked, thrashing against the heavy combat boots pinning her down.

Julian couldn't move. He was paralyzed by the crushing pressure of Harrison's boot on his hand, and by the sudden, overwhelming realization that his entire world was crumbling around him.

From the service hallway, heavy footsteps echoed.

The tactical commander emerged, holding the heavy iron door frame open.

Stepping out from the dark, cold corridor was my figure.

I walked slowly into the bright lights of the foyer. My torn silk dress was stained with dried blood and dirt, my dark hair was disheveled, and the deep cut above my eye was still swollen. But my spine was perfectly straight. My chin was held high.

Wrapped in a heavy, tactical thermal blanket in my arms was Penny, resting her head safely against my chest, her dark eyes looking around at the soldiers with quiet wonder.

The moment Harrison saw me, the cold, stony expression on his face cracked.

He lifted his boot off Julian's hand, turned around, and walked rapidly toward me. For the first time in ten years, the Iron Vanguard of the Sterling family showed emotion. His eyes softened, a look of profound grief and burning rage washing over his features.

"Sloan," Harrison breathed, reaching out with broad, gentle hands to wrap both Penny and me in a massive, warm embrace. "I'm sorry I was late."

"You're right on time, brother," I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder for a brief second before pulling back and looking into his eyes.

I turned my head slowly, looking down at Julian, who was groveling on the blood-stained marble floor, staring up at me with wide, terrified, pleading eyes.

"Sloan... my love... please," Julian whimpered, blood dripping from his chin, his hands outstretched toward me. "I was wrong! Khloe tricked me! She lied to me about everything! Please, tell your brother to stop! We are family, Sloan! Think of our daughter!"

I looked at him—the man I had loved for ten years, the man I had saved from a burning building, the man for whom I had sacrificed my youth, my genius, and my family name.

There was no sadness left in my heart. No regret. Only a cold, crystalline purity.

"You are not my family, Julian," I said, my voice echoing through the silent, ruined foyer like a death sentence. "You were just a mistake I made when I was young."

May you like

I looked at Harrison.

"Execute the erasure."
