Chapter 5 - The Queen Returns

Twenty-four hours later.

The private Sterling jet touched down smoothly on the runway of a private airfield in White Plains, New York. A fleet of six dark armored SUVs was waiting on the tarmac, their engines idling silently, flanked by a security detail of elite bodyguards in dark suits.

We were driven directly to the Sterling Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut—a massive, gated hundred-acre sanctuary surrounded by rolling green hills, ancient stone walls, and private security checkpoints. This was the ancestral seat of the Sterling Dynasty, a place where international leaders, central bankers, and industrial titans had gathered for over a century to shape the economic future of the world.

As our SUV pulled up the sweeping stone driveway, the massive double iron gates swung open automatically. Standing on the grand stone front steps, surrounded by dozens of household staff lined up in flawless formation, was an old man resting his hands on an ivory-headed walking cane.

Arthur Sterling. My grandfather. The ninety-two-year-old patriarch who had built the Sterling global empire from the ground up.

The vehicle stopped. Harrison stepped out first, opening the door for Penny and me.

The moment my feet touched the pristine marble driveway, Grandfather Arthur stepped forward, his cane clicking sharply against the stone. His eyes, though aged, were bright, sharp, and filled with tears as he looked at me.

"Sloan," Arthur said, his voice trembling with profound emotion.

"Grandfather," I murmured, my throat tightening as I stepped into his waiting embrace.

The old man wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight, his body shaking slightly with silent sobs. "Ten years... ten long years you hid yourself away in that miserable town, playing wife to a blind fool who didn't deserve to breathe the same air as you. My brilliant girl... my financial genius... you are finally back where you belong."

He pulled back, looking down at Penny, who was holding my hand, staring up at the grand mansion with wide, curious eyes.

Arthur dropped to one knee despite his arthritis, his face softening into a warm, joyful smile as he reached out a gentle, wrinkled hand to touch Penny's cheek. "And this must be little Penelope. Welcome home, my great-granddaughter. This entire valley belongs to you now."

Penny smiled shyly, wrapping her arms around Grandfather's neck, making the old titan let out a rich, booming laugh that echoed across the estate.

That evening, a grand family dinner was held in the main dining hall of the Sterling Estate.

Unlike the cold, performative, and cruel dinners at the Blackwood house, this table was filled with real warmth, laughter, and absolute love. My cousins, aunts, and uncles—all high-ranking leaders of various Sterling global subsidiaries—had flown in from around the world to welcome Penny and me back.

In the center of the table was a massive cake decorated with white icing and a silver crown, crafted specifically for Penny by the estate's head pastry chef.

As dinner concluded, Grandfather Arthur tapped his silver spoon against his crystal glass, bringing the grand room to an immediate, respectful silence.

"Tonight, we celebrate two things," Arthur announced, standing up slowly, raising his champagne glass high. "First, the safe return of my granddaughter Sloan and my great-granddaughter Penelope to the Sterling family fold."

Everyone at the table raised their glasses, cheering warmly.

"Second," Arthur continued, his eyes turning stone-cold and sharp as diamonds, "we celebrate the total, absolute annihilation of the Blackwood family."

He turned his gaze onto Harrison, who sat to his left. "Harrison, report on the status of the liquidation."

Harrison wiped his mouth with a napkin, pulling out an executive briefing tablet.

"The Blackwood Group has officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation as of four hours ago," Harrison reported smoothly. "All commercial real estate assets, including the Blackwood main estate, have been seized by Sterling Private Equity at pennies on the dollar. Julian Blackwood, Marcus Blackwood, and Victoria Blackwood have been formally indicted on twenty-eight federal criminal counts. Bail was set at fifty million dollars each—an amount none of them can pay, as all their personal accounts are frozen. They are currently occupying cells in the Cook County Maximum Security Facility."

"And the mistress?" my aunt Eleanor asked, taking a sip of wine.

"Khloe Vance was exposed publicly this morning," Harrison smiled coldly. "We released full forensic evidence to the media demonstrating that she committed perjury, fraud, and extortion. Every luxury brand deal she held was canceled within two hours. Furthermore, her family’s small retail business in Ohio was shorted into complete bankruptcy this afternoon. She is currently facing six years in state prison for evidence tampering and filing false police reports."

A soft, satisfied hum passed through the dining hall.

Grandfather Arthur turned to me, his sharp eyes filled with pride. "Sloan, my child. What are your plans now?"

I set my wine glass down, leaning back in my leather chair, feeling a sense of absolute clarity and supreme purpose taking root in my soul.

"I spent ten years hiding my mind, Grandfather," I said, my voice smooth, elegant, and filled with undeniable authority. "I spent ten years letting lesser men play with power they didn't understand. Tomorrow, I resume my position as Chief Executive Director of Sterling Global Investments."

A brilliant, fierce smile broke across Grandfather Arthur's face. He raised his glass even higher.

"To the return of the Phantom Architect!" Arthur declared loudly.

"To Sloan!" the entire Sterling family shouted in unison, raising their glasses high in the glittering light of the crystal chandeliers.

I raised my glass, taking a slow sip of vintage champagne, looking at Penny, who was happily eating her cake beside me.
