Chapter 2 - LEO VALE

Eleven minutes later, the private elevator doors of the penthouse burst open with a heavy mechanical chime.

Nora Greer swept into the foyer, flanked by two private paramedics carrying a foldable stretcher and trauma kits.

Nora was fifty-two, dressed in a sharp charcoal trench coat, her grey-streaked hair pulled back into a tight bun. She was the former Chief of Operations for Vale International Holdings—the global logistics, banking, and real estate behemoth created by Serena’s late father, Marcus Vale.

Nora took one look at the trail of blood on the white marble and her face went deadly pale.

"Get her on the board!" Nora barked at the medics, dropping to her knees beside Serena. She took Serena’s freezing, sweat-slicked hand in hers. "I’ve got you, kiddo. Breathe. Look at me. Keep your eyes on me."

"Nora..." Serena choked out, her teeth chattering as the medics carefully rolled her onto the stretcher.

"Don't speak," Nora commanded, wiping the wet hair from Serena’s forehead. "Preserve your strength. The ambulance is in the private basement bay. We’re going straight to Mount Sinai. Dr. Harrison is waiting in OR-3."

The journey through the city was a blur of flashing red lights, screaming sirens, and the cold, metallic smell of oxygen masks.

Inside the trauma bay at Mount Sinai Hospital, the world exploded into organized chaos. Surgical lights flared overhead. Nurses cut away Serena’s ruined silk gown while Dr. Harrison—a veteran high-risk obstetrician—scanned the ultrasound monitor with a grim, focused expression.

"Internal hemorrhage caused by partial placental abruption," Dr. Harrison announced sharply to his surgical team. "Fetal heart rate is dipping—102 beats per minute and dropping. We don't have time for a full spinal block. Prepare for an emergency general C-section. Now!"

A mask was pressed over Serena’s face. The sweet, chemical smell of anesthesia flooded her lungs.

As her consciousness began to slip away, the chief nurse leaned over her, holding a pen above a consent form.

"Mrs. Romano!" the nurse called out urgently over the monitor beeps. "Is there a spouse or next of kin we need to notify? We need a secondary emergency contact!"

Through the gathering fog of sleep, Dante’s face flashed through Serena’s mind.

Dante Romano—heir to the Romano crime syndicate, president of the multi-billion-dollar Romano Group, a man whose name made NYPD captains tread lightly and union bosses bow their heads. A man who claimed to hold New York in the palm of his hand.

A man who had refused his wife’s fourteenth call.

"No," Serena whispered beneath the plastic mask, her voice faint but crystal clear. "I don't have a husband."

She looked past the doctor’s shoulder to where Nora stood behind the observation glass, her arms crossed, watching with fierce, protective eyes.

"I have everyone I need," Serena breathed.

Then the darkness claimed her.

At 4:37 a.m., a sharp, shrill cry shattered the sterile silence of Operating Room 3.

"We have a boy!" Dr. Harrison announced, holding up a small, slick, wriggling bundle. "Time of birth: 04:37. Weight: six pounds, four ounces."

The surgical team worked with practiced speed, clearing the infant’s airway and wrapping him in warm flannel blankets before bringing him over to Serena as she slowly swirled back to consciousness in the recovery bay.

"Look at your son, Serena," Nora whispered softly, leaning over the side of the hospital bed.

Serena opened her eyes.

The nurse placed the baby against Serena’s bare shoulder. His skin was warm, soft, and damp. His tiny chest heaved as he let out another indignant, squawking cry, his small fist pressing against Serena’s collarbone.

Serena reached up with a trembling hand, her thumb tracing the soft curve of his tiny cheek.

For the first time that night, tears spilled freely from her eyes—not tears of pain, not tears of grief over a ruined marriage, but tears of absolute, blinding clarity.

Every complicated thing in her life—the Romano family politics, Dante’s endless lies, the gilded cage of the Manhattan penthouse—became suddenly, beautifully simple.

She had someone to protect now.

A boy who would never grow up believing that love meant waiting fourteen calls for someone to decide you were worth answering.

"Hello, my baby," Serena whispered, her lips touching his forehead. "I’ve got you. Your name is Leo. Leo Vale."

Nora stepped up beside the bed, watching the infant with tears glistening in her sharp eyes.

Serena turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto Nora.

"Do it," Serena said.

Nora’s expression tightened instantly. Her maternal tenderness gave way to the razor-sharp focus of an international financial operative.

"Serena," Nora warned softly, leaning closer so the nurses couldn't hear. "Once I initiate the severance protocols, there is no easy reversal. The moment the sun rises, Dante Romano will be surrounded by sharks."

"I know," Serena said.

"You gave him more than your hand in marriage three years ago," Nora continued. "You gave him access to the Vale trust infrastructure. You gave him our maritime shipping licenses, our offshore banking lines in Zurich, and our political connections in Washington. Half the reason Romano Group became untouchable was because your family's network quietly opened every door he knocked on."

"I know," Serena repeated, her voice steady and cold as steel.

"And when his father and the Romano capos realize what has happened... they will come after you," Nora said. "They are ruthless, Serena. They operate outside the law."

Serena looked down at little Leo, who had fallen asleep against her chest, his tiny breathing smooth and even.

"No," Serena said, her voice dropping an octave into an icy, unyielding hum. "They won't come after me."

Nora frowned slightly. "How can you be sure?"

May you like

Serena looked up, her dark eyes flashing with the terrifying, dormant intellect of the Vale dynasty.

"Because when Dante comes home," Serena said softly, "he’s going to discover that the empire he built... was never really his."
