Chapter 4 - THE RETURN TO MANHATTAN

At 3:00 p.m., a private Gulfstream G650 jet touched down at JFK International Airport, screeching across the tarmac before taxiing directly to a private hangar on the perimeter.
Dante Romano sprinted down the air stairs before the mobile steps had even fully locked into place.
He didn't have his luggage. He was still wearing the clothes he had thrown on in Paris—a wrinkled black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, and dark trousers. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw stubbled, his face drawn tight with a lethal mixture of rage, desperation, and terror.
Waiting on the tarmac were three black Cadillac Escalades.
Marco stepped out of the lead vehicle, looking exhausted, his tie loosened, his forehead slick with sweat. Beside him stood Uncle Salvatore—a veteran seventy-year-old capo with silver hair and cold, reptilian eyes who had served Dante’s father for forty years.
"Dante," Salvatore said, his voice deep and gravelly, carrying zero warmth. "You made a very foolish mistake in Paris."
"Shut up, Sal!" Dante barked, shoving past him to grab Marco by his lapels. "Where is she?! Did you check the hospitals?!"
"We checked every hospital in the tri-state area," Marco panted, trying to pry Dante’s fingers off his shirt. "Mount Sinai, New York-Presbyterian, NYU Langone... nothing! No record of a Serena Romano being admitted!"
"Because she didn't use my name, you idiot!" Dante yelled, tossing Marco backward against the car door. "She used her maiden name! Vale!"
Salvatore stepped forward, tapping his heavy gold ring against the polished hood of the Escalade.
"It doesn't matter what name she used at the hospital, Dante," Salvatore said coldly. "What matters is what she used at the federal courthouse at 8:00 AM."
Salvatore pulled a thick manila folder from inside his jacket and tossed it onto the hood of the car.
Dante snatched it up, flipping the cover open.
Inside were copies of official corporate asset seizures, federal freeze orders, and emergency financial injunctions.
"What is this?" Dante stammered, his eyes scanning the legalese.
"That is the reality of your marriage, Dante," Salvatore spat, stepping closer, his voice laced with venom. "Your father and I warned you three years ago when old Marcus Vale died. We told you that marrying Marcus Vale’s daughter wasn't just taking a pretty society girl as a wife. We told you the Vale family built the financial pipes this city drinks from!"
Salvatore grabbed the manila folder and slammed it against Dante’s chest.
"You thought you were the boss, Dante!" Salvatore hissed. "You thought because you had three hundred armed soldiers in Brooklyn and Queens that you owned New York! But for three years, every contract Romano Group signed was underwritten by Vale Capital! Every dock lease was owned by Vale Logistics! Every politician in Albany who looked the other way did so because Nora Greer made a phone call from the Vale Foundation!"
"I built Romano Group!" Dante screamed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "I expanded our revenue by three hundred percent!"
"USING HER MONEY!" Salvatore roared back, his aged face turning purple. "USING HER INFRASTRUCTURE! You stripped her father's empire, rebranded it with your name, and then treated her like an inconvenient housemaid while you ran around Europe with a twenty-four-year-old gold digger!"
Dante stood frozen, the noise of jet engines roaring in the background.
"Now the Vale Trust has cut the lines," Salvatore said softly, his voice dropping into a deadly, low whisper. "The capos haven't been paid today. The union bosses are refusing to unload our ships in New Jersey. The banks are calling in eighty million dollars in short-term loans before midnight. If you don't fix this with your wife in twenty-four hours, Dante... the Romano family will be bankrupt. And the board will vote to replace you."
Dante stared at his uncle, his breathing short and shallow.
"She's at the Vale Estate," Dante said suddenly, a spark of desperate realization lighting up his eyes. "In Greenwich. The private compound her father built."

"Dante, wait—" Marco started.
"GET IN THE CAR!" Dante screamed, tearing open the door of the Escalade. "WE’RE GOING TO GREENWICH!"
