Chapter 5 - THE IMPENETRABLE FORTRESS

An hour later, a convoy of five black Escalades filled with twenty heavily armed Romano family enforcers sped up the winding, tree-lined drive toward the iron gates of the Vale Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The estate stretched across fifty acres of private forest, protected by a twelve-foot stone wall topped with anti-climb sensors and infrared cameras.

Dante’s driver slammed on the brakes as the convoy reached the main entrance.

The heavy, high-security steel gates were closed tight. Standing outside the guardhouse were six men dressed in dark tactical suits, wearing Kevlar vests devoid of any insignia. They carried military-grade automatic rifles slung across their chests, standing in a disciplined, disciplined defensive line.

Leading them was Thomas Vance—a broad-shouldered, scarred fifty-five-year-old former Commander of the Navy SEALs who had run security for Vale International for fifteen years.

Dante slammed his car door open and marched toward the gate, his hands raised slightly, his face distorted with fury.

"Get out of my way, Thomas!" Dante bellowed. "I’m coming in to see my wife!"

Thomas didn't raise his rifle. He stood with his feet shoulder-width apart, his hands resting calmly on his tactical belt, looking at Dante as if he were nothing more than a stray dog bark at a fence.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Romano," Thomas said, his voice deep, calm, and utterly devoid of fear. "You are currently trespassing on private property owned by the Vale Family Trust. I suggest you turn your vehicles around and exit the driveway immediately."

"She’s my wife!" Dante shrieked, taking another step forward. "I have a legal right to see her! And where is my child?! Where is my son?!"

"You have no rights here, Mr. Romano," Thomas replied smoothly. He pulled a folded white paper from his tactical pocket and slid it through the iron bars of the gate. "This is an emergency temporary restraining order issued by the State of Connecticut, combined with an emergency full-custody order granted to Mrs. Serena Vale."

Dante snatched the paper, ripping it in half without even reading it.

"I don't give a damn about a piece of paper!" Dante roared, turning back to his convoy. "Marco! Sal! Get the guys out of the trucks! We’re going through these gates!"

Behind Dante, twenty armed Romano enforcers stepped out of the Escalades, reaching inside their jackets for their sidearms.

Thomas didn't flinch.

He calmly tapped his earpiece. "Protocol Delta. Target lock."

Instantly, from the heavy foliage of the surrounding trees and the roofline of the stone guardhouse, a dozen red laser sight dots appeared, dancing across the chests and foreheads of Dante, Marco, Salvatore, and every single one of their twenty enforcers.

From behind the stone wall, two armored tactical vehicles mounted with heavy remote-controlled turrets slowly rolled into view, their heavy barrels pointing directly at the convoy.

The Romano enforcers froze, their hands stopping mid-reach inside their jackets.

"Mr. Romano," Thomas said softly, leaning his face closer to the iron bars. "Your men are street fighters and loan sharks. My men are former Tier-1 special operators with combat tours in Mosul and Kabul. If one of your men pulls a weapon, this driveway will become a mass grave in four seconds."

Salvatore sprinted forward, grabbing Dante by his arm and yanking him backward toward the Escalade.

"Are you insane, Dante?!" Salvatore yelled in panic, looking at the three red laser dots resting on his own chest. "Back down! Back down right now!"

"Serena!" Dante screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing through the silent, autumn forest. "SERENA! I KNOW YOU’RE IN THERE! TALK TO ME! PLEASE! SERENA!"

High up on the second-floor balcony of the main stone manor, two hundred yards beyond the gates, a tall glass door slowly swung open.

Serena stepped out onto the balcony.

She was wearing a soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater and loose white trousers. Her hair was pulled back into a simple knot. In her arms, wrapped in a pale blue cashmere blanket, she held baby Leo.

Beside her stood Nora Greer, holding a black tablet.

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. His knees went weak as he stared up at his wife across the vast lawn.

"Serena!" Dante sobbed, taking a step toward the fence before Thomas pressed the tip of his tactical baton against Dante’s sternum. "Serena, please! I’m sorry! I was wrong! I came back! I’m here now! Let me see our boy!"

Serena stood on the elevated balcony, looking down at the desperate, sweating man who had once been her entire world.

Her face showed zero anger. Zero tears. Zero regret.

She simply looked at him with the cold, absolute detachment of a queen looking down at a deposed peasant.

Serena raised her right hand.

In her fingers, she held her titanium wedding ring—the five-carat emerald-cut diamond Dante had placed on her finger three years ago in a cathedral in Rome.

She held it up so the afternoon sun caught the glitter of the stone.

Then, with a gentle, effortless flick of her wrist, she let the ring fall over the balcony railing.

It tumbled through the air, dropping into the thick green grass below.

Serena turned her back on him, stepping back inside the manor with her son, while the heavy glass balcony doors slid shut and locked behind her.
