Chapter 3 - The Cold Truth

The trauma bay was quiet, dominated by the rhythmic, steady beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor. Warm blanket warmers were stacked against the walls, and a warm saline IV was dripping into Elena’s bruised arm.

When I stepped up to the side of the bed, Elena turned her head slowly. Her eye was still heavily swollen, but her right eye—a bright, clear hazel—locked onto mine.

“Elias,” she whispered, her voice gravelly and faint.

I dropped to my knees beside the bed, grabbing her small, bandaged hand, pressing my lips against her knuckles. “I’m here, my love. I’m right here.”

“I’m sorry,” she whimpered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dry blood on her cheek. “I tried to be strong. I tried to stand up to Mom... but Chloe held my arms, and Julian... Julian pushed me into the snow...”

A dark wave of violent fury crested inside my chest, but I forced my face to remain soft, gentle, and loving. I couldn't let the Ghost King terrify the woman I loved.

“You don't need to apologize for anything, Elena,” I said softly, stroking her hair away from her bandaged face. “You were brave. You fought for what your father gave you.”

Elena looked at me closely, her hazel eye searching my face with a sudden, sharp clarity that made my heart stutter.

“Elias,” she whispered. “How did you find me so fast? You were supposed to be in Albany. And... the nurses... they were calling you 'Lord Ghost.' The security guards bowed to you.”

The air in the small room hung heavy.

The lie had reached its expiration date. I could no longer protect her with a fiction while the reality of my world had just crashed into her life with bloody fists.

I reached into my shirt, pulled out a thin leather cord from around my neck, and lifted the medallion that hung from it—a heavy, platinum seal bearing the same crowned wraith as my tattoo.

“Four years ago,” I began, holding her small hand gently in mine, “I told you I was an independent logistics consultant who traveled for business.”

“Yes,” she breathed. “You... you organized cargo ships...”

“I own the ships, Elena,” I said quietly. “I own the ports. I own the logistics networks that move forty percent of the world’s wealth. My real name is Elias Thorne-Vane. To the world of commerce and shadows, I am known as the Ghost King.”

Elena stared at me, her mouth slightly open. “The... the mafia boss? The man the news talks about when they mention the international syndicates?”

“I am not a street thug, Elena,” I explained gently. “I am the authority that keeps the street thugs in check. I am the sovereign of an organization that operates above governments. I took a vow of secrecy when I retired to live a quiet life with you in Lake Placid. I wanted to give you a normal husband. A safe home. A life free from violence.”

Tears welled up in her good eye, overflowing down her nose. “You... you lied to me for four years?”

“I protected you for four years,” I corrected softly, placing her small hand over my beating heart. “Every choice I made was to keep you safe from the dark world I inhabit. But tonight, your family showed me that the darkest monsters weren't hiding in my world... they were hiding in yours.”

Elena closed her eyes, her chest rising and falling in long, shaky breaths. She didn't pull her hand away from mine. She held it tighter, her thumb brushing against my wedding band.

“What... what are you going to do to them?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

“Whatever you want me to do,” I answered truthfully. “I can make them vanish tonight. I can burn their estate to ash. I can leave them with nothing. The choice is yours, my Queen.”

Elena opened her eyes. The gentleness that had defined her for her entire life was still there, but beneath it, hardened by the freezing cold of the greenhouse floor and the sting of her mother’s sapphire ring, was a new, unbreakable steel.

“Don't kill them, Elias,” she whispered, her voice hardening. “Death is too easy. They love their money, their status, and their mansion more than they ever loved me.”

She looked straight into my eyes.

“Take it all away from them. Make them watch me rule the empire my father built.”

May you like

I smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that belonged entirely to the Ghost King.

“Your wish is my command, my love.”
