Chapter 8 - Shadows and Cedar

One week later.

The Vance estate had been completely restored. The shattered front entrance was replaced with a massive custom door crafted from solid Adirondack cedar and reinforced steel. The gardens were cleared, and a heated glass canopy had been installed over the old greenhouse, turning it into a warm sanctuary filled with tropical flowers, soft lanterns, and velvet armchairs.

It was 8:00 p.m. A light, gentle snow was falling outside, but inside the master living room, a fire was crackling warmly in the stone hearth.

Elena was sitting on the sofa, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and thick socks, sketching blue-prints for a new eco-resort on her tablet.

I walked into the room carrying two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows—just like I used to do in our small suburban house in Towson.

“Here you go, my love,” I said, handing her a mug and sitting down beside her.

Elena took the mug, inhaling the rich chocolate scent, leaning her head against my shoulder.

“Elias?” she asked softly, looking into the flames of the fireplace.

“Yes, Elena?”

“What happens now?” she asked. “To your world? To the Ghost King?”

I put my arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer into my side.

“The Ghost King is where he belongs,” I answered gently. “In the shadows, protecting the person he loves most. The global operations are run by Gabriel and my lieutenants. They only call me if the world is ending.”

“And what about my family?” she asked quietly. “Where are they?”

I took a slow sip of my hot chocolate.

“Victoria and Chloe have taken jobs at a dry cleaner in South Albany,” I reported flatly. “They live in a two-bedroom basement apartment near the highway. Julian is working as an entry-level valet at a hotel in Syracuse. They are learning the value of a hard day’s work for the first time in their lives.”

Elena stayed silent for a moment, letting the news sink in. She didn't feel joy at their suffering, but she felt a profound, quiet sense of justice.

“Do you think they will ever change?” she whispered.

“People like Victoria Vance rarely change, Elena,” I said honestly. “But they can no longer hurt anyone. Their claws have been pulled, and their legacy has been given to the people they tried to destroy.”

She turned her head, looking into my eyes. She reached up, her thumb gently tracing the faint, fading scar on my jawline—a souvenir from my past life.

“Thank you, Elias,” she murmured. “For saving my life. For fighting for me.”

May you like

“I didn't fight for you because I’m the Ghost King, Elena,” I whispered, leaning down to press my lips gently against hers. “I fought for you because I am your husband. And I will burn down the world before I let anyone hurt you again.”

She smiled—a bright, warm, dazzling smile that filled the room with light—and kissed me back.
