Chapter 7 - The Final Decree

Elena adjusted the microphone. She looked out over the room of executives—men who had ignored her for years, men who had bowed to her mother’s cruel greed, men who had thought she was nothing more than a timid schoolteacher’s daughter.

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” Elena’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged ballroom, clear, strong, and completely devoid of fear.

The executives shifted uncomfortably in their seats.

“Three days ago,” Elena continued, her hazel eyes scanning the front row where Victoria sat cowering, “Vance International was on the verge of being dismantled by individuals who cared nothing for my father’s vision. They believed that strength came from cruelty. They believed that money gave them the right to destroy lives.”

She paused, lifting a sleek silver tablet from the podium.

“As of eight o'clock this morning, Ghost Enterprises has restructured forty percent of Vance International’s corporate debt into a private trust. That trust is managed exclusively by me.”

The room erupted into quiet gasps and hushed whispers.

“Effective immediately,” Elena announced, her voice rising with authority, “the board of directors is dissolved. The former management team is terminated without severance. All resort operations, land conservation projects, and local employment guarantees will be honored and expanded under the new entity: The Arthur Vance Foundation.”

A loud clap echoed from the back of the room. It was the mayor of Lake Placid, who stood up and began to applaud vigorously. Within seconds, the rest of the local officials and junior staff joined in, a thunderous ovation filling the grand ballroom.

Victoria Vance stood up from her seat, her face red with humiliation, her voice screeching over the applause.

“This is illegal!” Victoria shrieked, pointing her trembling finger at Elena. “You stole this from us! You brought your mobster husband into our family business! You are a fraud, Elena! A fraud!”

The room fell silent once again.

Elena looked down at her mother from the elevated stage. There was no anger in her eyes. There was only pity.

“I didn't steal anything from you, Mom,” Elena said softly into the microphone. “Dad left this company to me because he knew you would destroy it. You threw me into the snow because you thought I was weak. But the snow didn't kill me... it just washed away my naivety.”

Elena gestured toward the doors.

“Security,” she ordered calmly. “Remove Mrs. Vance and her children from the premises. They are permanently barred from every property owned by the Arthur Vance Foundation across the globe.”

Two black-suited guards stepped forward, grabbing Victoria and Chloe by their arms.

“Get your hands off me!” Chloe screamed as she was pulled backward toward the exit. “Elena! You can’t do this to your family! We’re your blood!”

“Blood doesn't make a family, Chloe,” Elena replied, looking at me with a soft, beautiful smile. “Love does. And loyalty does.”

Julian didn't fight the guards. He hung his head, crying quietly as he was escorted out into the cold morning air, knowing that his life of unearned luxury was over forever.

As the heavy brass doors closed behind her disgraced family, the ballroom erupted into applause once more.

Elena stepped away from the podium, walking over to where I stood in the shadows near the velvet curtains.

She reached out, wrapping her arms around my neck, resting her head against my chest right over the tattoo of the crowned wraith.

“How did I do, My Lord?” she whispered playfully into my ear.

May you like

I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her close, resting my chin on top of her head.

“You were magnificent, my Queen,” I murmured, my voice filled with unconditional pride. “Absolute perfection.”
