Chapter 6 - The Tiger in Winter

While we were eating breakfast in the sunlit sanctuary of Richard’s estate, total, unadulterated war was breaking out across the city.

At the Whitmore Manor, Margaret Whitmore sat in her private study, staring at her laptop screen in absolute horror.

The headlines on every major financial and news website flashed in crimson letters:

BREAKING: Billionaire Philanthropist Richard Bennett Pulls $10M Endowment from Whitmore Foundation Amid Allegations of Estate Fraud and Child Endangerment.

FEDERAL AUDITORS LAUNCH INVESTIGATION INTO WHITMORE ASSETS.

MARGARET WHITMORE FACES FORENSIC SCRUTINY OVER ALLEGED FORGERY.

Her phone rang continuously, buzzing against the mahogany desk like an angry hornet. It was her chief accountant, then her lead legal counsel, then the president of the city bank demanding an immediate meeting regarding her looming line of credit default.

"Pick up! Pick up, you useless idiot!" Margaret shrieked into her phone, dialing her lead attorney, Marcus Vance.

"Mrs. Whitmore," Vance’s voice came through the speaker, tight, panicked, and devoid of its usual sycophantic warmth. "I'm looking at the injunction filed by Bennett’s firm. It's airtight. They have bank records, forensic handwriting experts, and sworn affidavits from forty charity donors who witnessed yesterday's gala incident."

"I don't care about the donors! Sue them! Sue Bennett!" Margaret roared, her face purple with rage. "Get an emergency injunction to seize that wretched daughter-in-law of mine and bring my grandchildren back to this house! They belong to the Whitmore legacy!"

"We can't, Mrs. Whitmore," Vance sighed heavily. "Bennett’s legal team obtained a permanent protective restraining order signed by a federal judge at midnight. If you or any of your agents come within five miles of Emily Carter or her children, the marshals will arrest you on federal contempt charges."

Margaret’s phone slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering onto the Persian rug.

For the first time in seventy years, the untouchable queen of high society sat in complete, desolate defeat. Her empire—built on money, intimidation, and the crushing of anyone who didn't fit her pristine mold—had been dismantled overnight by a man who simply looked at a broken teacup and decided enough was enough.

"Emily..." Margaret hissed the name like a curse, her fingernails digging deep into the arm of her leather chair until her knuckles turned white. "You think you've won... but this isn't over."
