Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Two weeks passed with a speed and tranquility I had never experienced in my life.

Under Richard’s protection, my daughters blossomed. They were enrolled in a wonderful private academy down the road, where they made friends, painted pictures, and played in green grass instead of staring at gray basement walls. Mrs. Higgins treated us like family, filling the house with the smell of fresh-baked bread and laughter.

And Richard... Richard was a constant, steady presence.

He didn't hover, and he didn't demand anything from me. He simply existed in the background like a mountain range—solid, reliable, and entirely unshakeable. Every evening, we sat on the back patio watching the river while the girls chased fireflies across the lawn.

"You look different, Emily," Richard said one evening, handing me a glass of iced tea as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in strokes of violet and gold.

"Different how?" I asked, smiling softly.

"You're standing taller," he said, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners. "When I first met you in that hallway, you looked like a ghost trying not to take up space. Now... you look like a queen defending her kingdom."

I laughed, a light, genuine sound that felt foreign even to my own ears. "That's because I don't have to look over my shoulder anymore. I don't have to listen for footsteps on the basement stairs."

"You never have to look over your shoulder again," Richard promised, his voice dropping into a register that made my heart skip a beat. "Margaret has filed for bankruptcy protection. Her assets are frozen. She's moving out of the mansion by the end of the month into a modest townhouse on the south side. Her reign is over."

"Good," I murmured, staring out at the river. "I don't hate her... but I never want her near my girls again."

"She won't be," Richard said firmly.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors leading from the living room slid open, and Mrs. Higgins hurried out onto the patio, looking flustered and pale.

"Mr. Bennett... Emily... you need to come inside right now," she said, her voice shaking.

"What is it, Mrs. Higgins?" Richard stood up instantly, his relaxed demeanor vanishing, replaced by the razor-sharp alertness of a predator.

"There’s... there’s someone at the front security gate," the housekeeper stammered. "It's Margaret Whitmore. And she has a camera crew with her."
