Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

The black Rolls-Royce carrying Richard and me pulled up to the front security gates fifteen minutes later.

Parked outside the massive iron bars was an old sedan surrounded by three local news reporters, a camera operator, and Margaret Whitmore. She looked older, her hair unstyled, wearing a heavy black winter coat, but her eyes still burned with the manic, desperate fury of a cornered animal.

As soon as she saw Richard’s car approach, she rushed forward, pressing her face against the iron bars like an inmate at a prison yard.

"Emily! Emily Carter, you ungrateful little parasite, open this gate!" Margaret shrieked, waving her arms wildly as the camera crew scrambled to film her meltdown. "You stole my son's legacy! You kidnapped my grandchildren!"

Richard rolled down the car window, stepping out smoothly into the chilly evening air, standing directly in front of the gate like a stone statue. His security detail immediately flanked him, forming an impenetrable wall between the property and the reporters.

"Mrs. Whitmore," Richard’s voice boomed over the camera microphones, cutting through her hysterical screaming. "You are in direct violation of a federal restraining order. If you do not clear this property within sixty seconds, I will have the county sheriff arrest you for criminal trespass and harassment."

"Shut up, you arrogant billionaire!" Margaret screamed, turning her wrath directly onto Richard, her mascara running down her cheeks from the cold wind. "You think you can rescue a penniless maid and play white knight? She’s a user! She’s a nobody! She doesn't belong in your world!"

One of the reporters pushed forward, shoving a microphone toward the gate bars. "Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Whitmore claims you used your corporate monopoly to illegally bankrupt the Whitmore Foundation in a personal vendetta. Do you have a response?"

Richard didn't even look at the reporter. He kept his eyes locked squarely on Margaret Whitmore, a slow, cold smile touching the corner of his lips.

"I didn't use a monopoly, young man," Richard said, his voice carrying clearly across the broadcast. "I simply stopped funding a monster. The Whitmore Foundation was a PR machine built on tax evasion and the subjugation of human beings. Its collapse is not a vendetta. It's justice."

"You're destroying my family!" Margaret sobbed hysterically, dropping to her knees right there on the wet asphalt, clutching the iron bars. "Please... Emily, please! Just let me see the girls! I'm their grandmother!"

I stepped out of the car, walking slowly up behind Richard. I didn't hide behind him anymore. I stepped up beside him, the heavy wool jacket he had given me on the first night draped over my shoulders like a shield.

"You never viewed them as your grandchildren, Margaret," I said, my voice steady, clear, and loud enough for every microphone to capture. "You viewed them as failures because they weren't boys. You locked them in a dark room, you starved their spirits, and you treated human beings like garbage."

Margaret looked up, her tear-streaked face twisting into pure hatred. "You'll pay for this, Emily! You'll end up in the gutter where you started!"

"No, Margaret," I said softly, looking down at the fallen matriarch with absolute pity. "I'm never going back to the gutter. Because unlike you... I actually know what love looks like."

Richard reached out, sliding his warm hand over mine, his fingers intertwining with mine securely.

May you like

"Sheriff's department is arriving," Richard murmured, nodding toward the flashing red and blue lights appearing down the driveway.

Within two minutes, county deputies arrived, placing handcuffs on Margaret Whitmore as she screamed curses into the night air, dragging her away from the gates once and for all. The camera crews captured every single second of it—the definitive, public execution of her untouchable reign.
