Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Line

Six months later, the corporate restructuring of Whitaker Foodservice Supply was complete. The fraudulent shell companies had been dismantled, the stolen funds recovered through court-ordered asset seizures, and a new executive board of honest, transparent professionals installed to run Grandfather Charles’s legacy the way he had always intended—with integrity and hard work.

Colin Doyle was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison with no possibility of parole, while Vanessa—facing charges of conspiracy and obstruction—accepted a plea deal that stripped her of her remaining trust assets and placed her on five years of supervised probation.

On a bright, crisp Saturday morning in late spring, I stood on our back patio, watching Lucy run through the sprinklers with her friends, her laughter echoing clear and untroubled across the green grass.

My military career called me back for periodic reserve briefings and intelligence consultations, but my primary post was right here—guarding the perimeter of the life I had built, the family I loved, and the peace I had fought so hard to protect.

The sliding glass door opened behind me, and Michael stepped out, handing me a fresh glass of iced tea.

"Thinking about the past?" he asked, following my gaze toward our daughter.

"Just evaluating the terrain," I smiled, taking a sip of the cold tea.

Michael laughed, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close against his side. "And what does Colonel Carter's intelligence assessment say about our current security status?"

I looked out across the sunlit yard, watching the water droplets sparkle in the air around Lucy as she chased a butterfly across the lawn.

"Perimeter is secure," I said quietly, resting my head against his shoulder. "And the mission is accomplished."
