Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

Three days later, the storm outside matched the mood inside the grand executive boardroom of Whitaker Foodservice Supply.
The mahogany conference table—the same table Grandfather Charles had sat at for forty years—was surrounded by senior board members, corporate legal counsel, and two representatives from the state corporate regulatory commission.
I walked into the room wearing my Class A Army dress uniform, the ribbons and badges gleaming against the dark fabric. My military bearing commanded the room instantly; every head turned as I pulled out my briefcase and walked to the head of the table where my grandfather’s empty chair used to sit.
My mother sat near the center, looking ten years older than she had a week ago, her hands trembling as she clutched a lace handkerchief.
"Colonel Carter," Whitaker’s chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, began nervously, standing up to adjust his glasses. "Given the... unfortunate criminal proceedings involving Mr. Doyle, the board has convened an emergency session to address executive restructuring."
"There is no need for a lengthy debate, Arthur," I said, placing my leather briefcase on the mahogany surface and popping the brass latches with a sharp click.
I opened the folder and slid three copies of a certified forensic audit across the table.
"As of 0800 hours this morning, Colin Doyle has been formally charged with corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy, and attempted poisoning," I announced, my voice carrying clear and commanding across the room. "Furthermore, under the emergency governance clauses of the Whitaker Family Trust, any executive officer implicated in criminal enterprise or financial malfeasance forfeits all voting shares and operational authority immediately."
Vanessa, who had been allowed to attend via video conference from her attorney's office, let out a sharp gasp over the speakerphone.
"You can't do that! That’s half our family trust!" Vanessa’s voice echoed through the boardroom speakers.
"I didn't do it, Vanessa. Your husband did," I replied evenly, looking directly into the camera lens mounted above the screen. "And under trust provisions section 14-B, your proxy voting rights were legally assigned to me following your failure to report a known felony."
Arthur Pendelton quickly flipped through the legal documents, consulting with the state regulatory commissioners seated beside him. After a tense, silent minute of reading, Pendelton looked up, swallowed hard, and nodded.
"The documentation is... entirely legally sound, Colonel," Pendelton admitted, clearing his throat. "With Colin Doyle detained and Vanessa Doyle’s voting rights suspended pending judicial review... you hold the majority controlling interest in Whitaker Foodservice Supply."
"Correct," I said, locking my hands on the edge of the table. "Effective immediately, I am appointing an independent forensic accounting firm to audit every single subsidiary, vendor contract, and construction invoice associated with this company over the last five years. Any employee or executive who participated in or covered up these discrepancies will be terminated and turned over to federal prosecutors."
My mother finally broke her silence, her voice trembling as she looked up at me from across the table.

"Allison... what happens to the family?" she whispered, tears pooling in her eyes.
"Mother," I said softly, looking down at her with a mixture of pity and unyielding resolve. "The family was destroyed the moment someone decided my daughter’s life was an acceptable collateral cost for corporate greed. What we are doing now is just clearing the rubble."
