Chapter 5 - The Perimeter Breach

My pulse spiked into the red zone, but my mind went ice-cold. Whitaker Foodservice Supply, embezzlement discrepancies, missing consulting funds, a poisoned child, and now my brother-in-law sneaking into my house in the middle of the night. The pieces clicked into a terrifying, coherent mosaic.

This wasn't just a family dispute. It was corporate sabotage and financial cover-up.

If my financial audits at Whitaker Foodservice Supply were getting too close to uncovering their embezzlement, and I was scheduled to present my findings to the board next month... eliminating me—or breaking me by targeting my family—was their only insurance policy.

"Allison? I know you're here," Colin’s voice echoed down the hallway, sounding less like a concerned relative and more like an intruder hunting through a target area.

I slipped off my shoes, letting my stockinged feet make zero sound against the kitchen tile. I clicked off my flashlight and stepped silently into the deep shadows beside the pantry door, my tactical training overriding every instinct of fear.

Footsteps approached the kitchen entrance.

Colin stepped into the pale moonlight filtering through the kitchen window. He was still wearing his tailored gray suit, but his jacket was off, his tie loosened around his neck. In his right hand, he held a heavy, solid-brass decorative bowl we kept on the foyer console table—a makeshift weapon.

He scanned the kitchen, his eyes landing immediately on my open laptop glowing on the island counter.

"Smart," Colin muttered to himself, stepping closer to the screen. He leaned over the island, his eyes scanning the security playback footage paused right on the frame of him holding the amber dropper bottle.

"Looking for this?" I asked.

My voice cut through the dark kitchen like a razor blade.

Colin flinched violently, spinning around so fast he nearly knocked over a barstool. He raised the brass bowl, his eyes wide and panicked as he searched the shadows.

"Allison! What—what are you doing hiding in the dark? You scared the hell out of me!" he stammered, his facade of corporate confidence shattering in real time.

I stepped out of the pantry shadows, keeping myself balanced, my stance wide and combative.

"Put the bowl down, Colin," I commanded, my voice flat, hard, and absolute.

"Don't be ridiculous, it's just a family misunderstanding," Colin laughed nervously, taking a step backward toward the exit. "Vanessa and I were worried about you, so I came back to check the house—"

"You came back to wipe the local storage drive on my security system," I interrupted, pointing directly at the laptop screen. "Too bad my cloud backup syncs in real-time to a secure military server in Virginia. Your little drop is already archived in triplicate, complete with timestamp, IP address, and facial recognition data."

Colin’s face twisted. The nervous corporate smile vanished, replaced by a cold, desperate ugliness.

"You should have stayed in the Army, Allison," Colin snarled, gripping the heavy brass bowl tightly in his hand. "You should have stayed overseas where you belonged instead of sticking your nose into Whitaker Foodservice Supply's books."

"So that's what this is about," I said steadily, keeping my eyes locked on his weapon hand. "Embezzlement wasn't enough? You had to poison a seven-year-old child?"

"We didn't mean to give it to her!" Colin snapped defensively, the truth slipping out in his panic. "The sedative was meant for you, to put you out of commission for twenty-four hours while we accessed your safe deposit box and cleared out your copies of the audit files! Vanessa grabbed the wrong cup from the counter during the party prep!"

The revelation hit me with the force of a flashbang grenade.

They hadn't targeted Lucy. They had targeted me. Lucy had simply picked up the wrong pink unicorn cup from the kitchen counter.

"You monsters," I whispered, the rage inside me igniting with terrifying clarity.

Colin lunged forward, swinging the heavy brass bowl in a violent arc toward my head.
