Chapter 10 - The Song of the Wind

Six months later.

The spring sun had thawed the mountain snow, leaving the valley covered in bright green grass, blooming wildflowers, and clear blue skies.

In the center of the lawn behind the stone house, a brand-new wooden playground had been built—complete with two tall swings, a spiral slide, and a wooden lookout tower.

Marcus was swinging high into the air, his yellow sneakers kicking toward the blue sky, his laughter ringing out across the quiet mountain valley like silver bells.

"Higher, Dominic! Higher!" Marcus shouted happily.

Standing behind the swing set was Dominic Cray.

The multi-millionaire syndicate leader—a man whose name had once made the most dangerous criminals in Chicago tremble—was laughing openly, his large hands gently pushing my four-year-old son higher into the sunlit air.

I sat on the wooden picnic table nearby, sketching in a notebook, watching the two of them.

Over the past six months, the hard lines of Dominic’s face had softened completely. He spent his mornings walking through the pine forests, his afternoons helping me raise Marcus, and his evenings sitting on our wide porch, listening to the gentle hum of the mountain wind.

The dark syndicate world he had ruled for twenty years felt like a distant, faded nightmare. Julian Moretti was in federal prison, Victor Strand was serving a thirty-year sentence for treason and conspiracy, and the Cray empire had been transitioned into a legitimate international logistics enterprise managed by Lev.

Dominic pushed the swing one last time, letting it gently come to a stop.

Marcus leaped off the seat, running over to where I sat at the table, clutching a small yellow dandelion he had picked from the lawn.

"Look, Mommy!" Marcus announced proudly, handing me the bright flower. "I picked it for you!"

"It's beautiful, sweetheart," I said, kissing his forehead as he tucked the stem into my hair.

Dominic walked over, leaning his tall frame against the edge of the wooden picnic table beside me. He reached down, taking my hand in his, his broad thumb stroking the back of my knuckles with a gentle, protective warmth.

"What are you listening to, Dominic?" I asked softly, looking up at his profile against the bright blue sky.

Dominic closed his eyes for a moment.

He listened to the distant, sweet song of a meadowlark sitting in the tall pine trees. He listened to the gentle gurgle of the mountain stream flowing past the rocks. He listened to the soft, rhythmic sound of my breathing, and the happy laughter of the three-year-old boy who had saved his life.

He opened his eyes, looking down at me with a warmth that filled my whole soul.

"I'm listening to my life, Elena," Dominic whispered, pulling me close against his side as Marcus ran back toward the slide. "And it's the sweetest music I've ever heard."

The mountain wind blew gently through the valley, carrying the soft sounds of laughter, peace, and freedom high into the vast, open sky.

The three years of dark silence were finally gone forever—replaced by a song of love that would never end.
