Chapter 5 - The South Side Threat

The war didn't wait for morning.
At 3:15 AM, the peaceful quiet of the Cray estate was shattered by a sudden, deafening explosion that shook the floorboards of the master suite.
BOOM.
The glass windows rattled in their frames. Alarms began to blare across the entire house—high-pitched, mechanical shrieks accompanied by flashing red emergency lights along the hallways.
Marcus woke up with a sharp cry, sitting up in his crib, clutching Barnaby to his chest. "Mommy! Mommy!"
I leaped out of bed, grabbing Marcus in my arms, pulling him tight against my chest as the bedroom door was thrown open.
Lev stood in the doorway, wearing a heavy Kevlar vest, holding an automatic assault rifle. "Mrs. Vance! Get into the safe room behind the closet! Now!"
"What's happening?!" I screamed over the blaring alarms.
"Julian Moretti," Lev snapped, checking the hall behind him. "They just blew the front security gates with a thermite charge. They have four SUVs moving up the driveway!"
Before I could reach the walk-in closet, Dominic stepped into the room.
He looked entirely different now. The cashmere sweater was gone, replaced by a dark tactical uniform and a ballistic vest. In his right hand, he held a sleek black sidearm. But the most terrifying change was his face—it was totally calm, devoid of fear, radiating a lethal, focused energy.
"Lev," Dominic commanded smoothly. "Take three men and secure the east corridor. Don't let them reach the central staircase."
"Boss," Lev hesitated, looking at Dominic's head. "Your ear... the concussive noise from the blast—"
"My ear is fine, Lev," Dominic snapped, his grey eyes flashing like steel. "In fact, I can hear those bastards crunching gravel on my front lawn. Move!"
Lev turned and ran down the hallway, shouting orders into his tactical radio.
Dominic walked straight over to me and Marcus. He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small silver key on a leather strap, and pressed it into my palm.
"This opens the emergency escape tunnel inside the walk-in closet," Dominic instructed, his deep voice slicing through my panic. "It leads to an underground bunker beneath the detached carriage house three hundred yards away. It has independent air filtration, food for a month, and a satellite communications array."
"Are you coming with us?" I cried, my fingers locking around the silver key.
"Not yet," Dominic said. He looked down at Marcus, reaching out to give my son’s head a quick, gentle pat. "Your boy saved my life, Elena. Now I'm going to make sure no one ever threatens his."
"Dominic, don't!" I shouted, grabbing his tactical vest. "There are too many of them!"
Dominic looked down at my hand on his vest, then met my eyes. A faint, dark smile touched his lips.
"You don't understand, Elena," Dominic whispered, his voice smooth and terrifyingly confident. "For three years, Julian Moretti thought he was fighting a deaf man. He forgot who I was before the silence."

He turned on his heel, racked the slide of his handgun with a sharp clack, and swept out of the master suite into the red-lit hallway.
A second later, the sound of gunfire erupted downstairs.
