Chapter 8 - The Clearing Storm

I rushed over to the small wall monitor, pressing the black talk button below the screen.
"Dominic!" I cried. "Dominic, we're inside the bunker! They followed us down the tunnel, but I locked the blast hatch!"
On the small color screen, Dominic Cray’s face appeared.
He was standing in his main library upstairs. His tactical vest was splattered with dirt and dust, and a thin cut bled near his left temple, but his grey eyes were clear, calm, and completely victorious. Behind him, Lev and three other guards were standing near the doorway, securing a stack of captured weapons.
"Are you or Marcus hurt?" Dominic asked immediately, his voice filled with an intense, sharp concern.
"No... no, we're okay," I breathed, wiping my nose with the back of my hand. "Marcus is fine."
Dominic let out a long, heavy breath on the screen. The visible tension in his massive shoulders seemed to dissolve.
"Good," Dominic said quietly. "Good. The house is secure, Elena. Julian Moretti’s strike team has been completely neutralized."
"Neutralized?" I whispered.
"Three of his senior lieutenants were captured alive in the courtyard," Dominic explained, his tone dropping into a dark, deliberate rhythm. "Including Julian’s younger brother, Marco. When Marco realized I could hear his tactical radio commands over the house intercom, he surrendered on his knees."
A quiet knock sounded on the other side of the heavy bunker hatch—not the frantic kicking of an enemy, but a rhythmic tap-tap-tap.
"Lev’s team is outside the tunnel door now, Elena," Dominic said through the monitor screen. "They've cleared the shaft. You can unlock the hatch."
I looked at Marcus, who nodded happily. "Can we go back to the castle now, Mommy?"
I walked over to the circular wheel, spun the heavy locking mechanism counter-clockwise, and pulled the steel door open.
Lev stood in the tunnel hallway, holding a tactical flashlight, a warm, reassuring smile on his blood-stained face. He lowered his weapon instantly.
"Mrs. Vance," Lev said respectfully, taking a step back to give us room. "The Boss is waiting for you upstairs."
Ten minutes later, we walked back into the main library of the Cray estate.
The blaring security alarms had been shut off. The red emergency lights had been replaced by the warm, golden glow of the room's crystal chandeliers.
Dominic sat behind his massive mahogany desk. A private physician was dabbing rubbing alcohol onto the small cut on his temple, but Dominic waved the doctor away the moment he saw us step through the oak doors.
He stood up, stepping around the desk.
Marcus let go of my hand and ran straight across the room, stopping in front of the giant mafia boss.
"Mr. Cray!" Marcus announced, holding up his blue dinosaur drawing, which had somehow survived the sprint down the tunnel inside his jacket. "I saved my picture!"
Dominic looked down at my three-year-old son.
Then, in front of Lev, the physician, and two tactical guards, Dominic Cray dropped to both knees on the Persian rug. He took the blue dinosaur drawing from Marcus’s small hands, looking at it as if it were a priceless piece of fine art.
"It's the most beautiful picture I've ever seen, Marcus," Dominic said softly, his deep voice rich with genuine emotion.
He looked up at me.
"Julian Moretti called my private line ten minutes ago," Dominic said. "He offered an unconditional surrender. He is turning over all his North Side assets, liquidating his business accounts, and leaving the state of Illinois by midnight tonight."
I gasped. "Just like that?"
"He has no choice," Dominic said, standing up smoothly, holding the dinosaur drawing carefully in his hand. "The entire underworld knows I can hear again. The myth that I was broken, disabled, and vulnerable is dead. By tomorrow morning, every family in the country will know that the Cray syndicate is stronger than it has ever been."

He walked over to where I stood, stopping two feet away.
"And it's all because a young mother brought her brave little boy to work," Dominic added gently.
