Chapter 5 - The Marcone Message

By three o'clock that afternoon, the command center in the basement of the Moretti estate was fully operational.

Monitors covered the walls, displaying live video feeds from our docks, our warehouses, and the perimeter perimeter guards patrolling the forest line. Six of my most trusted capos—men who had bled with my brother Leo—sat around the heavy steel tactical table.

I stood at the head of the table. I was no longer the sleep-deprived ghost they had spent three years humoring. I was Vance Moretti, the Don of the Northern Coalition, fully awake and operational.

"Julian has given us everything," I said, tossing a black USB drive onto the center of the table. "Encryption codes, meeting locations, offshore account numbers, and the names of four dirty customs officials at the Port of Genoa."

Geno, my senior enforcer—a massive man with a scarred jaw and graying hair—looked at the drive with cold satisfaction. "What do you want us to do with Marcone, Vance?"

"Marcone thinks he bought my fleet," I said, my voice dropping to a low, lethal hum. "He thinks I am sitting upstairs in a delirium, signing away my legacy while Julian counts his silver. We are going to let him continue thinking that until eight o'clock tonight."

"And at eight?" Geno asked, a dark grin spreading across his face.

"At eight, Marcone is meeting Julian at the abandoned dry docks on 5th Street to finalize the transfer papers," I revealed. "Only Julian won't be attending. I will."

The room fell silent. The capos looked at each other, feeling the shift in energy. The lion was out of his cage, and he was hungry.

Before I left the command center, I pulled Geno aside.

"I want double security on the main house," I instructed sternly. "Four men outside the east wing where Sophia and Lily are staying. If a single stranger steps within fifty yards of that child, I want them put in the ground before they can draw a breath."

"Understood, Don Vance," Geno said, placing a heavy hand over his heart. "The little girl who made you sleep... she's sacred now. The men know."

I headed upstairs to prepare.

As I passed the grand staircase on the second floor, I saw Lily sitting on the top step, wearing a new pair of pink sneakers and holding her gray rabbit. Sophia was standing nearby, unpacking boxes in the newly furnished master suite next to mine.

I paused at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the little girl.

"Are you going out?" she asked, leaning her chin on the wooden banister.

"I have some business to take care of," I replied.

"With the bad men?"

I hesitated for a fraction of a second. "Yes. With the bad men."

Lily nodded sagely, as if she understood the geopolitical complexities of the Italian-American underworld perfectly. She held Barnaby out toward me.

"Take Barnaby," she offered. "He's very brave. He bites."

I looked at the scruffy, one-eared gray plush rabbit, then up at the tiny girl offering me her most prized possession in the world to keep me safe.

I walked up two steps, reached out, and took the rabbit gently from her hands.

"I will keep him in my jacket," I promised solemnly, placing the rabbit into the inner pocket of my tailored suit coat, right beside my custom Kimber 1911 pistol. "He will be my chief advisor tonight."

May you like

Lily beamed, her small hazel eyes crinkling with absolute joy. "Bring him back before bedtime. He needs his story."

"I will be back before bedtime, little lion," I swore. "That is a promise."
