Chapter 7 - The New Dawn

It was eleven-forty-five p.m. when my SUV pulled back through the heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate.

The perimeter lights were bright, illuminating the freshly manicured gardens and the stone facade of the mansion. But inside, the house was warm, quiet, and peaceful.

I walked up the grand staircase, my heavy coat removed, my boots quiet against the carpet.

I stopped outside the master suite in the east wing. The door was slightly ajar, letting a thin strip of soft, warm light spill out into the dark hallway.

I pushed the door open gently.

Sophia was sitting in a rocking chair near the window, fast asleep, an open book resting on her lap.

On the massive king-sized bed in the center of the room, tucked beneath a mountain of white feather duvets, was Lily. She was curled up on her side, her yellow lion pajamas glowing softly in the light of a small nightlamp, her small thumb tucked firmly into her mouth.

I walked across the room on tiptoe, making no sound at all.

I reached into my suit pocket, pulled out Barnaby, and gently tucked the one-eared gray rabbit under her small arm.

Lily stirred slightly. Her hazel eyes fluttered open halfway. She looked up at me, recognized my face, and let out a long, sleepy sigh of absolute contentment.

"Did Barnaby bite the bad men?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"He was very brave," I whispered back, sitting down on the edge of the mattress and gently brushing a dark curl off her forehead. "He saved the kingdom."

"Told you," she murmured, her eyelids growing heavy once more. "Now... you have to sleep."

"Yes," I said, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settling into my bones—a peace that no medicine, no money, and no army could ever provide. "Now I sleep."

I didn't go back to my empty, light-filled master bedroom down the hall.

I walked over to the large velvet armchair in the corner of Lily's room, sat down, leaned my head back against the soft leather, and closed my eyes.

Outside, the rain tapped softly against the glass.

Inside, the lion was safe, the king was awake, and the house was finally, truly at rest.

I fell asleep in ten seconds.
