Chapter 3 - The Price of a Signature

Dominic stared at the legal papers lying mere inches from his nose, his eyes widening in a mixture of pain and disbelief. “An annulment? You... you planned this. You set me up.”
“You set yourself up the moment you mistook my silence for weakness,” Elena replied, tightening her grip on his wrist just enough to make him hiss in pain. “I knew exactly what kind of man you were, Dominic. I knew about the non-disclosure agreements you forced your previous assistants to sign. I knew about the offshore accounts you used to drain your last business partner’s funds. I married you because I needed to be inside this penthouse tonight, legally recognized as your spouse, to access the documents your mother keeps hidden in the family trust safe.”
Dominic tried to surge upward, a desperate burst of adrenaline fueling his muscles. “You bitch—!”
Elena calmly shifted her weight, driving her knee a fraction of an inch deeper into his lumbar spine while applying a counter-lever to his wrist. The structural leverage was absolute. Dominic cried out, his forehead hitting the floor as his strength evaporated.
“Every asset your mother has hidden from the federal regulators is currently being downloaded from your private server,” Elena continued, her voice completely serene. “My brother isn't an academic, Dominic. He’s a digital forensic investigator for the State Department. The moment we crossed the threshold of this hotel as husband and wife, my legal access to your shared network was activated under the spousal transparency clauses of your own corporate bylaws. You wanted a business arrangement? You got one.”
Dominic’s mind raced, the cold reality of his situation finally cutting through his bruised ego. He was completely trapped, physically paralyzed by a woman he had thought he could break, and financially compromised by a strategy he hadn't seen coming.
“If I sign that... it means the marriage never existed,” Dominic muttered, his voice shaking. “My mother will kill me. The Vance stock will plummet if news of a fraudulent marriage contract gets out.”
“Then I suggest you sign it quickly, before the media gets the notification I programmed to send at 1:00 AM,” Elena said. She reached over to the nightstand, grabbing a heavy silver pen she had placed there earlier, and dropped it next to the paperwork. “Sign the first three pages, Dominic. Full waiver of spousal support, full admission of irreconcilable fraud, and a complete release of my family's name from any Vance liabilities.”
With a trembling, humiliated hand, Dominic reached out and grabbed the pen. Elena carefully adjusted her hold, relaxing the pressure just enough to allow his right arm to move, but keeping her body positioned to strike if he made another sudden movement.
Dominic signed his name on the designated lines, the ink scratching aggressively against the paper, a physical manifestation of his utter defeat. The proud, untouchable heir of the Vance empire was currently signing away his control while pinned to his own floor.
Just as he finished the final signature on the third page, the silent atmosphere of the penthouse was shattered.
From the private elevator vestibule at the end of the long hallway, a sharp, melodic electronic chime rang out. The elevator doors slid open, followed immediately by the rhythmic, commanding click of expensive designer heels echoing against the marble tiles.
Dominic’s eyes widened with a sudden, desperate surge of hope. “Mother,” he choked out.

Victoria Vance was arriving. The formidable matriarch of the family, a woman known for her ruthless social climbing and iron-fisted control over her son’s life, was entering the suite. She had undoubtedly come to ensure that Dominic had successfully executed the family’s plan to secure Elena’s compliance, ready to gloat over their new, broken asset.
Instead, she was about to walk into a scene her aristocratic mind could never have conceived.
