Chapter 4 - The Matriarch’s Arrival

Elena did not panic at the sound of the approaching footsteps. With a smooth, fluid grace that looked almost choreographed, she released her hold on Dominic, stepping back into the shadow of the canopy bed. Dominic scrambled away from her like a frightened animal, gasping for air as he clutched his throbbing shoulder, his white shirt stained with dust and sweat.
The double doors of the master bedroom swung open, and Victoria Vance stepped into the room.
Victoria was a woman who commanded space through sheer intimidation. Dressed in a tailored emerald evening gown, her diamonds catching the light, she looked like a queen surveying her domain. Her sharp eyes immediately scanned the room, expecting to see Elena weeping on the bed or standing submissively in a corner while Dominic held court.
Instead, her gaze landed on her son, who was currently sitting on the floor, disheveled, wild-eyed, and holding his arm in obvious pain.
“Dominic?” Victoria’s voice was like ice cutting through glass. Her regal composure fractured instantly. “What is the meaning of this? Why are you on the floor? And why is your room in such a state of disarray?”
Dominic looked up at his mother, his face a mask of profound humiliation. He opened his mouth to speak, to demand that security be called, but before he could utter a word, Elena stepped into the light.
“Good evening, Victoria,” Elena said smoothly. She had already retrieved the signed annulment papers from the floor and held them neatly against her side.
Victoria turned her fierce, judgmental gaze onto Elena, her eyes narrowing as she noticed the lack of shoes and the absolute calmness radiating from the younger woman. “What have you done, you ungrateful little peasant? Dominic, call security immediately. Get this hysterical girl out of my hotel.”
“Security isn't coming, Victoria,” Elena said, her voice carrying a cold weight that made the older woman pause. “In fact, the hotel’s internal security detail has just been replaced by the State Police. They are currently downstairs in the lobby, securing the central server room.”
Victoria stiffened, her hand instinctively flying to the diamond pendant at her throat. “What nonsense are you speaking? Do you have any idea who we are? We own this city.”
“You own a house of cards,” Elena corrected, stepping forward until she was standing a mere three feet from the Vance matriarch. “Your son was kind enough to record our entire interaction tonight. Dominic, show your mother the phone on the sofa.”
Victoria looked over at the sofa, her sharp eyes spotting the hidden device. Dominic looked down, unable to meet his mother’s gaze.
“Inside that phone is a complete recording of your son attempting to physically assault me with a riding crop to enforce a fraudulent financial contract,” Elena explained, her tone conversational. “But more importantly, while Dominic was busy playing the dictator, my brother's team successfully extracted the encrypted ledger from your private family safe—the one detailing the offshore shell companies you used to bribe city officials for the waterfront development project.”

Victoria’s face went pale, the deep emerald of her dress suddenly making her skin look sickly and yellow. “You... you don't have the authorization. Those files are protected by biometric encryption.”
“They were,” Elena smiled, a small, dangerous curve of her lips. “Until Dominic married me. The spousal access override we included in the pre-nuptial boilerplate text—the one your lawyers failed to read because they were too busy trying to strip me of my inheritance—granted my legal identity complete administrative rights to the family network the second the marriage license was filed at the courthouse. I didn't marry your son for his money, Victoria. I married him for his network access.”
